  • Who is this mysterious stranger?

This is possibly the most mysterious amp of all time. I have spent countless hours researching this thing. Other than a few reviews here on ebay, no one has ever heard it. There isn't any raving or booing about it anywhere on the internet audiophile forums. Where did this thing come from? Another country, another world? After all, it is Onkyo. You'd think people would be talking about it. There isn't even anything on the Onkyo site itself. Just weird. You can find the manual easily enough online though, but that's about the only sign that it does indeed exist, except for the fact that I own one. I purchased this amp for 3 reasons. First it's Onkyo. Second, it's rated at 100 watts per channel. Third, the price was right, at around $100. The unit I received was clean, without scratches or any sign of use. This amp is loaded with features! It has the usual A-B and and AB channel option. There is 2 tape deck inputs, phono, CD, and VCR/DVD video inputs as well. It has a direct source switch, which lets you hear your music straight from the source bypassing the tone portion of the amp. If you're lucky, it will come with a remote. Mine did. It also has a simulated stereo switch which will take a mono signal, and make it sound like stereo. I can't imagine a need for this, but it's there. The amp has switched 3 AC receptacles on back which is nice. It also has a standby mode, where the amp will power the receptacles, but isn't necessarily on, but don't be fooled, this amp draws power as long as it's plugged in. I live off grid on solar and don't like phantom loads, so I keep it unplugged when not in use. Out of curiosity, I took this unit to an old school audiophile guy who owns a shop where he has been buying, repairing, and selling stereo equipment for 30 years. Of course he's never seen one before either, but after trying it out, he told me that unless I wanted to spend many hundreds of dollars, there was nothing he could sell me that wasn't just a step sideways, rather than up. This amp isn't massively heavy, but it's far from light. It appears to have a good sized transformer. This is just an amp, there is no tuner built in, although there is a matching tuner that came with mine. I don't listen to FM, so I haven't even tried it. I gave this amp 5 stars because I can't find a thing wrong with it. It sounds good, and has plenty of power, but power is a relative thing compared to your choice of speakers. I have this driving 2 sets: A pair of Dahlquist DQ8's and a set of Bose 301's. There is a noticeable power drop when switching from one set to combined operation, but it's not overcomable. Again, I can find nothing wrong with this amp and wouldn't hesitate from recommending it to anyone, especially at this price point.
