This is the only complete film record we have of the icionic Maria Callas in a role, though sadly not an operatic one. She chose Pasolini's film for her debut, in what she thought might become a new medium to replace her dwindling opera out put. Pasolini is an add choice, given the style he frequently employed. We must be greatful that at least we have a stunning visual portrait of this enormously powerful singer. She dominates every scene in which she appears. Gorgeously costumed by the operatic designer Tosi, Callas at once fascinates and mystifies as she sweeps across a background of ancient and primitive beauty. This is a strangely silent film, with the faces of the actors used to tell the grisly story. There could not be a better face than that of Callas to convey the burning emotions that are the story of the sorceress Medea. Hypnotic is the best word I can think of to describe this unique bit of cinema. It certainly should be on the list of either Pasolini or Maria Callas fans. Patrick C.
