An Introduction to TV Antennas
If you don't subscribe to a cable television provider, you can still make sure your TV receives local channels by using a TV antenna. TV antennas might conjure up the idea of a tall pole on top of your home, but in 2006, most countries (including the United States) stopped broadcasting analog signals. Instead, televisions began to rely on digital signals. However, they often use the same frequency, so many used TV antennas for sale on eBay can actually still work for your television.
What is a digital TV antenna?
Digital antennas receive signals that are broadcast from television stations, then route them to your TV so you can watch the program being put out. Some, like outdoor TV antennas, consist of tall poles atop your home. Others are the "bunny ear" type, which usually sit on top of your television itself. Many modern HD antennas stick onto your window to receive television signals.
In general, there are two kinds of digital television signals according to the FCC: VHF and UHF. Some antennas are better at receiving one type of signal, but you need one that can receive both in order to watch television. Also, you might find some digital TV antennas that are advertised as "high gain."
What does a high-gain aerial antenna do?
High-gain television antennas are able to receive signals from further away than other types. Basically, they receive the television signal being broadcasted, then amplify it as they send it into your home. High-gain antennas can make transmitted signals up to 100 times stronger. Also, they're directional, meaning that you can use them to get signals from specific directions rather than all around.
Areas on the fringe of digital transmission ranges get poor reception due to their distance from the originating signal. A high-gain antenna uses a precise, narrow radio beam to increase signal strength. It targets radio signals and amplifies weak ones. They function best in flat, open areas where the topography doesn’t disrupt radio waves.
What are anti-ghosting properties and how will they help?
Ghosting occurs when the aerial, or antenna, receives an out-of-phase signal. It creates a ghost image to the right of the screen. Some areas experience ghosting worse than others because the antenna picks up other signals coming from various directions. Adding a high-gain aerial to your home or business can help get the signals back into phase, reducing ghosting.
What factors affect television transmission?
The height of masts, the location, the transmitter used, and the application used with digital signals contribute to television transmission. Using a high-gain aerial can improve reception, as can raising the mast height to which an outdoor aerial is connected.
FAQs About TV Antennas
Do I need a TV antenna if I have cable or satellite TV?
While cable and satellite TV services offer a wide range of channels and programming, having a TV antenna can still be beneficial. It allows you to access local channels and content broadcast over the airwaves for free, providing additional options and potentially saving on subscription costs.
Can I use a TV antenna with my smart TV or streaming device?
Most modern smart TVs and streaming devices feature built-in tuners that allow you to connect a TV antenna for over-the-air reception. By integrating your TV antenna with these devices, you can access both streaming content and local broadcast channels, offering a diverse range of entertainment options without the need for additional equipment, such as cable boxes.
Do TV antennas require adjustment?
In general, TV antennas require minimal maintenance once installed properly. However, factors such as weather conditions, physical obstructions, and changes in broadcasting frequencies may affect reception quality. Periodically check and adjust the position of your antenna for optimal signal reception, especially after significant weather events or structural changes in your area.
