Lego Technic Star Wars figures are, in my opinion, among the coolest Lego SW sets available. All of them have ingenious motion features and have that Technic style: hinting at the subject rather than a realistic model, like a blueprint rather than a finished structure. R2 is no exception, and is a fairly cool model. The scale and proportions are very good, and he fits nicely with other Technic models (unlike the way-too-large Pit Droid, for example). He has 2 motion features: a flip-up computer interface arm (controlled by a lever on the back) and a third leg that flips forward at the push of a button (powered by 2 rubber bands). This motion also causes the main side legs to tip rearward at the appropriate angle- a very smooth and realistic motion. I also like the "wheels" in each of the 3 feet, and the "hoses" on the legs add a realistic touch. However, I don't care for R2's dome. The shape of the dome is outlined in dark blue, but it should be silver. Also, none of the features of R2's "face" are there- the hologram emitters, the red light, the exhaust port on top.... nothing. His main "eye" is represented as a transparent blue disk, when it should be a black disk on a dark blue square. With some time, spare parts, and good ol' fashioned Lego ingenuity, you'll be able to make this R2 dome look quite a bit more movie-accurate. I'll be posting my own mods online; google it soon. I also wonder why there's only the one "arm." With just a handful more pieces you can mirror-image the build and have a second tool arm on the left side, the location of R2's "claw" grabber. One last custom idea: there are lots of other R2 droids in the movies. It's a fun custom project to make a different R-series droid. I bought a second R2 kit and built an R5-D4 I'm pretty happy with; pics to follow. Overall, I recommend buying this model. It's not the coolest of the SW Technics, but definitely a must-have if you're a collector. With a little bit of work you can build a GREAT R2-D2 using this set as the basic blueprint.Read full review
I really enjoy building this R2D2 LEGO TECH (8009) kit. I have Darth Vader, C3PO, Storm Trooper, Battle droid, Jango Fett and Mechanic droid. All of them are fun to build. My favorite one to build is still R2D2.
