I bought this CD because I wanted a nice collection of Roberta Flack's best known songs.This disc contains solely(or "soully",heh heh)material from her '70s heyday recorded for the Atlantic label and,as such,is not as comprehensive as a later collection titled "Softly With These Songs" that features some of her '80s hits on different labels.This set makes for a nice companion volume as it includes some Top 40 hits that were not on the later compilation.A lot of the songs are featured on both volumes,but no matter which one you buy you can't go wrong with any collection featuring Ms. Flack's distinctive voice.
Mellow 70s pop - Bittersweet and surprisingly good. It's been a while since Roberta Flack has been more than a name from the past. She wasn't one of the great vocalists but does what the best do - she communicates the emotions and feelings of a song very well. Most of these songs are either well known or at least seem familiar from somewhere so you can listen to the whole album and not fell like you have to skip anything. My only issue would be the duets - I want to hear Roberta Flack - but they are still good and fit well. Ending with Janis Ian's Jessie does end the whole album on a bleak note but the whoile feel of the album is one of nostalgia for missed opurtunties or lost loves so it does fit the overall feel. I basically bought it for the first track but found myself enjoying the whole album - I know these are the "hits" but as an album it does stand up well overall against most others you might buy.
