Lancaster's biography reports that Jim Thorpe himself was used as Consultant during making of this film. Thorpe said as he watched the circus-trained acrobat Lancaster performing Thorpe's athletic moves for the movie, "I was never that handsome." The movie studio was pressured NOT to dwell on Thorpe's tragic end in alcoholism so this movie is glossed with semi-happy ending. If you like Burt Lancaster and want to see a romanticized enactment of an astonishing REAL Native American athlete, get this DVD.

Bert Lancaster did not make a Saturday afternoon 25 cent special! I came up in that time period in fact in 1951 I was 9 years old and very much into this kind of flick. I would have been much more pleased if more holes were filled. All in all I was very pleased to find it on dvd format!

Great biopic about the ill-fated Jim Thorpe. Burt Lancaster is very engaging in the title role. We forget that he does not look like the character nor he is too old for the part, due to the fact that he plays Jim Thorpe with sincerity and conviction. Very good Max Steiner score.

The true story of an American Indian who (through sports) became world famous. Burt Lancaster is the only Hollywood actor that could've starred in the title role.
