I'm not sure when this item was originally manufactured but the plastic is becoming brittle. My item was packaged well but still sustained an impact in shipping that destroyed the base and the power switch housing. My mother loves this device, I have a hard time believing it couldn't be replaced with a small drip coffee pot couldn't do the same thing.
