  • Great detail, fun look for Popeye

For as long as I can remember I have been a huge Popeye fan (as a child I mistakenly called him Pipeye, after all he had a pipe and one eye). I love the cartoons (especially the older ones), and am truly enamored with the Robin Williams movie! In 2001 when Mezco first came out with the Popeye action figure I, of course, had to have one, and Olive, and Bluto, and Wimpy, and the Popeye in the peacoat. So, as you can guess I was ecstatic to see this one. I rushed to e-Bay to buy it. He looks better in person than it did in the photos. The details are fantastic, bulging muscles, faded tattoos, dirty fingernails, attention to every detail. • He comes with: • Two heads, a grimace and one without a grimace, really the only difference is one shows teeth on his pipe side, and the other doesn’t. • 6 corncob pipes. Three normal pipes and three with smoke blowing out, like it does in the cartoons when he goes “toot, toot”. The detail is good, you can see the pattern on the corncob, and the stem has the black mouth piece you’d se on a real pipe. They are small and frail (sadly I already broke one, but I’ll get to that later). • 7 hands, two fists, two open, two grasping and a right-hand pointing, all with dirty fingernails… • Two cans of spinach, one closed with a label, the other without a label but crushed and open. Again, the detail on the cans is great, they look old and a tad rusty. My only comment here is the open can should have a crushed label too after all why would he open an unlabeled can? It could be peas for all he knows… • A compass. It opens and closes and the lid is engraved with an anchor and faux text. • A Telescope that collapses. That’s the best detail there, it does have lenses but it is rather plain. • Three caps. A captain’s cap, a sailor’s cap, and a stocking cap. The captain’s cap and sailor’s cap are well used and battered. The caps are held on by magnets, except the stocking cap, it slips on very snugly. This makes them satisfyingly moveable. He can have them at a jaunty angle, over his eyes or pushed back on his head. • One duffel bag. In the photos it looks plain white, but in person it is worn and stained. • A stand. Shiny and new with an anchor on it. • His shirt is cloth, the sleeves get in the way of bending the arms, but otherwise it looks good. The pants are denim, tailored well. • His shoes are articulated at the ankle, and look well-worn and used. • His articulation is very good, and I had a lot of fun setting him various poses. He’s a tad stiff, which is good. But, as I said earlier the clothes tend to bind a little, eh, what can you do? • A peacoat. This is the weakest part of the figure. It’s all but impossible to get on (here’s where I broke the pipe, but I probably should have removed it first. And when the pipe breaks off in the mouth it doesn’t come out! Now there’s no way to put another pipe in that mouth again). You have to take off both hands, and head (so you don’t break something), the left arm came off while doing this too (fortunately it is designed to come off). I’d suggest not putting the coat on at all. And Mezco should look into making the coat a little bigger. Peacoats aren’t supposed to be snug anyway. Speaking of taking parts off. The hands easily come off and back on with a satisfying pop. The arms are detachable at the elbows, I don’t know if the legs come off, I don’t plan on trying. And the head is easily removable. Over all I am very satisfied with this product. Here’s hoping they come out with other Popeye characters in this style.

  • Well blow me down!

This is an excellent rendition of Popeye. The head sculpts are amazing. Fabric clothes are well made. Comes with many alternate hands and accessories that really make the piece versatile. Highly recommended!
