  • Must see: A movie filled with caring and compassion.

A truly awesome work, performed by first-rate actors, even if the director was Elia Kazan. The story of a girl in Williamsburg, Brooklyn early in the 20th century. What she goes through, as she fights to be in a good school. Heartbreak and survival. In one scene, I cried, it was so moving.

  • Amazing family film! You must see this wonderful film-just superb, from a bygone era when actors could really act!

The love between a father and daughter has never been better depicted than in this film-one viewing is not enough!

  • WARM & CAPTIVATING FAMILY DRAMA!

An up-close and very human portrayal of the uphill battles and sacrifices of a young family fighting to survive financially and emotionally, during the tough mid-40's in the city of New York. This movie is Elia Kazan's first directorial debut and a double Academy Award winner. Without any money, but with all the love and hope they can hold in their heart, the family sets out to carve their daily existence in a harsh and demanding world. Though they know God is watching over them, their faith is tested and weakened, but ultimately, it is miraculously restored. Don't miss it, it is truly special. Luzmarina

  • Wonderful movie!

One of my all-time favorite movies! It's the story of Francie Nolan, growing up in Brooklyn at the turn of the 20th century, with her family. It's a hardscrabble life. Poverty is rampant; Francie's father Johnny works as a singing waiter who has more than a little dependence on drink, and so isn't always the most reliable. Francie's mother Katie works as the building cleaning woman in order to provide the family with a three room flat. Life is hard, yet Francie remains optimistic. Truly a gem of a movie.

  • It is well worth the time to see this movie.

I was 5 years old when this was made, but that was one its charms. Also it was shot in black and white, and very reminiscent of that era. Oh, how our world has changed, the 'old days' were better. (As long as I can keep my cell phone).

  • A Movie For Everyone

After husband read the book he asked me to buy the DVD for our collection of best movies. We both enjoyed the movie as much as the book. Great story and great actors.

  • A Tree Grows in Brooklyn DVD good, although book much better

As with so many movies, the book had so much more detail, and the characters were so much better developed. However, after reading the book, this was a fun film to watch.

  • Slow start but worth watching to the end.

This movie starts out pretty slow, but stick with it. It's a poignant story of a young girl growing up with the challenges of poverty. Her parents have two different approaches to life and each ones teaches her valuable lessons.

  • Impactful & touching

I read this book as preteen. Never forgot it-so impactful-maybe because hit close to home. The movie and acting are exceptional. Watched last night: Laughed/cried. Beautifully done “coming of age” story! I’ll watch again soon.

  • Lovely movie!

"A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" was my mother's favorite book and one of mine as well, so when I discovered of late that there was a movie version, I quickly ordered it. Anyone who loved the book will not be disappointed.
