These articulated spine cars are fascinating to watch either on a display shelf or as they roll by on O gauge track. Designed to minimize tare weight (at least in the full-sized world), they look quite different from traditional flat cars, and are certain to attract interested looks from layout visitors. Lionel's design is also ingenious because an additional wheel truck packed in every box allows multiple platforms to be connected together into one long articulated car, mimicking the typical full-size cars consisting of five platforms. The highway trailers can, of course, be removed for use elsewhere on the layout, leaving the spine car to run empty where its unique details will be even more evident to the viewer. The trailer rear doors open outward very realistically, and the trailer body can even be removed from its diecast chassis for use as an intermodal container. For its detailed, realistic design and for its adaptability (adding additional platforms for example) I give this style of car the highest possible marks. As it comes out of the box, the two-platform car measures about 21 inches, not counting the couplers. Since I've mentioned couplers, let me mention one more thing before I go: Even though the wheel trucks are plastic, the couplers on all of my spine cars have operated quite well, remaining closed when they should and opening when desired. With these cars, Lionel has shown both creativity and the ability to deliver a quality product.Read full review
