To give some context my main reason for purchasing this was to get something more solid than the typical $30 cardboard and glue shelves. This unit both impressed and disappointed me.
The main problem in this price range is that "Engineered Wood" can mean everything from paper to big hunks of OSB and very few manufacturers give any more details. In this case the material is not stranded, to my initial dismay, but it makes up for this with a high content of some rather tough resin. The resin also holds details and color well, though the trade off is a bunch of off-gassing. Leave the open box in your garage for a while before assembly or open your windows.
The hardware is clearly labeled, easy to assemble, and mostly durable, but is let down by the use of plastic thread inserts for the bolts. That there are inserts at all is a win, and lets the unit be taken up and down repeatedly, but the plastic flexes and allows the panels to wobble a bit when the bookshelf is loaded up.
In the end, while metal threaded inserts would be appreciated, the inserts are all perpendicular to the stress on the unit, so they won't tear out. The panels themselves are plenty tough and look good, and while you can totally find something nicer at a higher price, this is a solid option for around $100 shipped.
