This C-Clip is not required as the reel will work without it, but it can save a handle if the handle nut falls off for any reason. It really should be a 30 cent part, but ABU Garcia does not make it any more, so I am willing to pay up for a part that completes a reel. I tried some C-Clips I bought at the hardware store, but they don't work. This clip is a very specific size that fits over the post at the top of the drive shaft but is small enough to fit inside the reel handle nut.
