Every time a book like this comes out, the inevitable Twilight comparisons begin. When a movie adaptation is made, the whining about Twilight imitations reaches a fever pitch. And it's a real shame that everyone now seems to think of YA fiction as 50 Shades of Twilight. Especially since a lot of the stuff coming out now is damn good storytelling. Divergent definitely falls into that category. This is not a story about an insipid codependent romance between a minor with no personality and a century-old sociopath. In fact, other than the main female character with an old-fashioned name that she shortens to something snappier (Beatrice Prior takes on the name Tris after her Choosing Ceremony), the books have pretty much nothing in common at all. Divergent is about a young woman living in a world that's coming apart at the seams, doing what she must and refusing to apologize for it. She is caught in the eternal dilemma of women: she must prove that she is strong and brave enough to compete alongside her peers, but cannot appear strong and brave enough to beat all of them lest they punish her for it. She must constantly decide and re-evaluate who she can trust, all while fighting an internal battle between what she has been taught, what she is now learning, who she is, and what is necessary for her survival. It's an internal struggle that anyone who has been through or is going through the painful transition from adolescence to adulthood can relate to, and it should not be overlooked simply because it happens to belong to the same genre that spawned Twilight.Read full review
Great book. My 12 year old daughter (advanced reader) is enjoying it after reading Hunger Games.

This story is set in the future, and if you like Science Fiction, you will like this book. It's a great, well written story, and has all my favorite elements: action, problems that need to be solved, and great characters. I am an elementary teacher, and saw one of our older students reading this book, and asked him about it. He recommended it. This is not just a 'kids' book. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
I ordered this book for my son and he likes it
