SynopsisThis first of its kind memoir offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of the Navajo code talkers., The Navajo code is the only unbroken code in modern warfare. It ensured the end of WWII by assuring the US victory in Japan. Only one original Navajo code talker still survives; Code Talker is his story. The Japanese had managed to crack every code the United States used. US military intelligence turned to the Navajo recruits and their native language to create a secret military code that the Japanese were unable to break and allowed embattled regiments of Marines to communicate quickly, concisely and above all, securely., The first and only memoir by one of the original Navajo code talkers of WWII. His name wasn't Chester Nez. That was the English name he was assigned in kindergarten. And in boarding school at Fort Defiance, he was punished for speaking his native language, as the teachers sought to rid him of his culture and traditions. But discrimination didn't stop Chester from answering the call to defend his country after Pearl Harbor, for the Navajo have always been warriors, and his upbringing on a New Mexico reservation gave him the strength--both physical and mental--to excel as a marine. During World War II, the Japanese had managed to crack every code the United States used. But when the Marines turned to its Navajo recruits to develop and implement a secret military language, they created the only unbroken code in modern warfare--and helped assure victory for the United States over Japan in the South Pacific. INCLUDES THE ACTUAL NAVAJO CODE AND RARE PICTURES

  • Code Talker Unexpected Success Story.

Initially this seemed very slow, however the more we (our book club) got into the book the more we all saw in what it taught us about the war in the Pacific. Most of us were unaware of Japan's motives - esp since they had been an ally in WWI. Understanding that these 29 men were as important as they were was somewhat at contrast with how they were treated (no R&R, no time off, etc) and no ability to tell anyone what they did, even after returning state-side, was very disheartening. What was redeeming was Chester's drive to continue with his schooling and get past his family's problems (children's deaths, divorce, etc) and become the accomplished man he was. It was sad that by not being able to talk about what he did limited the ability of the gov't and him, to become a better example of what others in the Indian community could have used as a role model of how to succeed. My father - who was also in the Pacific always said that joining the Army was the best thing that ever happened to him in terms of GI Bill schooling, a civilian gov't career with the Air Force, exposure to and better understanding of world events, etc., was the best thing that ever happened to him.

  • Good book, poor packaging.

The book was as expected, however, it was sent is a paper style large envelope so when it was recorded the envelope was soaked and the book was wet as well. The small waxy lining was not enough to protect it from the weather. I was able to dry out the book without too much damage but it was frustrating.

  • Great untold story.

Very compelling story. My understanding of the Navaho was vastly improved. It is sad to realize the credit for their contribution could not be told due to the very nature of their work!

  • Sad

I was very disappointed in this book. My expectation was to learn specific times when the code talkers actually made a difference. I got disenchanted and only got through about half of the book.
