As a kid I loved to play dice-based sports games. A buddy of mine read "The Universal Baseball Association, Inc." by Robert Coover ... although I did not know the author at the time, the name "Universal Baseball Something" always stuck in my mind. Now, nearly 40 years later, I decided on a whim to look for it and found it. Anyone who's ever rolled dice to get a sports result will love this book. It captures the imagination needed to transform the simple act of rolling dice into the deep and rich world of major league sports. Just as Henry sees his players running, hitting and throwing, the reader sees Henry rolling dice and playing out the games. It's double escapism!
I've played table top baseball since 1975. And we make up a world for our league. My team has Hugo Bezdek as manager, because the team thought they would get government assistants for hiring a immigrant from Czechoslovakia who spoke no English and and new nothing of baseball. The Terra Incognitas are so cheap they have coin laundry in the team clubhouse. The visitors locker room has no hot water. Our Buffalo Pastime league is a combination of The Great American Novel by Phillip Roth, and Veck as in Wreck, by Bill Veck. So yes I love the book.

Brilliant character study of a man who creates a world that consumes him. Alternatively, Coover's painting of the rich, rewarding world of fantasy sports has never receiving more accurate or loving treatment.
