In watching Herman and Katnip, there is definitely something overall Ren-&-Stimpyish to the whole thing, but Herman and Katnip were supposedly legitimately worked characters. Granted, they may have been simply emulating Tom & Jerry, but still, many of the Harveytoons have a strange insight into what life must have been like, not the glossy coating that eventually took over WB and Disney. Harveytoons shows poverty as a way of life, not a situation to be pitied. But back to Herman and Katnip. Yes, they are a one-trick pony; nearly each episode is anonymous mice cousins, all with the same voice, terrorized by Katnip, then here comes a non-chalant Herman, sometimes singing 'Ding Dong Bell' then follows with "Hiya, fellas!" all voiced by Arnold Stang (Top Cat). Katnip has the same voice as Baby Huey, which can definitely make things interesting, as Huey's misguied perception is he is getting sympathy from the audience and we just love him (something that is also in the comic books and I must say, if it worked then, it certainly doesn't work now) Such an unintelligent voice on a vicious character might be another saving grace for Herman and Katnip. While the cartoons may not watch like Tom & Jerry or Sylvester & Tweety Pie, again, there is truly an intriguing aspect to the Herman and Katnip series. Now I could swear there are still more Herman and Katnip cartoons I didn't see here. I may be mistaken. There are six Herman and Katnip cartoons here that are not in the 'complete' Harveytoons collection, so it seems to me some are still missing (for some reason). I could swear I have seen some more silent versions from a later era when the characters don't speak, but I suspect those episodes are in this set, one being in a department store. Yes, you will feel you are watching the same cartoon over and over. The deal with Herman and Katnip is they are never friends. Katnip always loses, you never really feel sorry for him and you never really root for Herman either. It offers a truly amazing train-wreck aspect of rubber-necking the cartoon, then going on with your life. But still as imitating of WB as the Harveytoons are, there is still an insight into life not found in other cartoons of that era, so Herman and Katnip, as well as the other Harveytoons, are definitely worth checking out. And Herman and Katnip are really considered to be the inspiration for Itchy and Scratchy on the Krusty the Klown Show on the Simpsons. Others may not feel so, and that is their right and opinion.Read full review
