  • Excellent reference

Addonizio begins by helping writers explore the wealth of possible subjects available to them. She provides explanation and beautiful examples, then moves on to exercises that help the writer delve into the subject areas. She moves on to language itself, including rhyme, rhythm, and structure. She explains how to use them in a way that drives home the poem. Finally, she offers advice and resources for gaining confidence, getting past blocks, and getting published. The book is truly a companion and guide for poets at any level.

  • Great if you want to feel wretched about life and poetry

This book is considered de rigueur for poets but I have to say, I had to get rid of it, so filled with rancidness and ugliness it is. The focus on images of negativity, (a kitten being thrown against a kitchen wall, a small child being molested by her father, crushing monotony in landscape and life, broken necks and bloody sheets, and on and on... Dear Lord!) in most of their 'poetry' examples and the ignoring of the exaltation that poetry can bring, the upliftment and relief for both the writer and reader, makes this book something I will send to the thrift store at my earliest convenience. Disappointed and disgusted.
