  • For my Puppy

My puppy has suffered from demodectic mange since 4 months of age. I am convinced her mom passed it to her and should not even be bred. I racked up over $500 in vet bills trying to cure it as the Ivomec(sp) never cured it. It actually got worse. The only thing that helped her was the antibiotics, since her skin was so inflamed and becoming infected. After my puppy began throwing up and refusing to take the Ivomec, I did some research and discovered it was a pesticide! I had no idea. The vet told me it was a steroid to help her immune system fight off the mites. I discontinued it and began slathering vasaline on my puppy's skin after her third painful skin scraping revealed she still had a major mite infestation! I never took her back to the vet and the vasaline actually worked. Fast forward 4 months to now, we moved and my puppy became so stressed it triggered another bout of mange. This one was even worse. Her skin was actually oozing as she kept scratching until skin was coming off! I began giving her Benadryl to help with the itch and antibiotics for the infection. This time, however, the vasaline was not helping as much, and she kept licking it off! Then I remembered Shapley's, which I remember people were putting in their hair to make it grow, though it was made for horses to fight skin issues and hair loss. So I ordered some and my dogs skin has improved in just a few days! She is back to eating and being her usual mischievous self. She smells like a vat of bacon grease and her hair is all greasy but she is on the road to recovery and I am so happy. I was scared we were going to have to find a rescue to try to save her since I cannot afford any more vet bills for medicine that is both harmful to her and doesn't even work. I know it will take some time for her hair to grow back, but her health is all that matters and she is doing so much better now. I'd suggest muzzling your pet for 10-15 minutes after application to allow the oil to soak in a bit. I hate doing that to her but if I don't she will just lick it all off of her legs and mouth, which are her worse areas. I hope this helps anyone with a puppy suffering from red/puppy/demodectic mange. I assume it would work well on sarcoptic mange as well but I cannot speak on that since my puppy doesn't have that type.
