A very good camera if you can find one that has been looked after. Built out of materials that are designed to be robust rather then for looks. Have a very reliable shutter. Go for the practical prime lenses, they all seem to be good. Most of the zooms are re-badged sigma lenses and are probably best avoided.

The BX20 and BX20S were the last SLR cameras made in the DDR. The BX20 is lighter than earlier models. I enjoy earlier M42 models very much for their simplicity, price and quality lenses. The BX20 is quiet, pleasant to hold and has all the top features of Japanese cameras made at the same time but was less expensive when new - Praktica offered great SLRs. This offers many of the features of the M50 range with a good choice of second hand bayonet lenses today. This model has been described as an excellent student choice. It is a camera one can learn the craft of improving your photographic skills at a fantastically good price. An excellent, informative camera. Make sure you buy one with a new battery fitted, it will be even better value.

Having searched for a Praktica Prakticar 35-70mm medium zoom lens I found one attached to a BX20! The price for the lens was within my budget so the camera was an added extra, even though it had a couple of faults, which, incidentally I have been able to overcome. The lens quality has clean elements, both front and rear and the focussing barrel runs smoothly as doe the zoom function. The delivery was first class with the system well packaged. A supplier to keep on my list!

The Praktica BX20 is fine example of this model of slr film camera. I've always considered it a better buy than say a Contax of the same kind, and a sight cheaper. Its comfortable to use, with simple to use mechanics. With a good lens, say a Pentacon prime, the images produced are of a very good standard. I would recommend this camera to any student or collector of good vintage film cameras. Personally I prefer German camera engineering and their lenses, to any other in the market place.
