This is the second in Victoria Laurie's series starring Abby Cooper, Psychic Eye. Great cozy fun and a fast read: as in the first book, the heroine, who earns her living as a professional psychic, gets into one outrageously wacky situation after another and goes head-to-head (and sometimes lip-to-lip) with her hunky significant other, FBI agent Dutch Rivers. It's kind of like "I Love Lucy" with paranormal trappings. Laurie has the know-how that gives the series verisimilitude: just like her character, she is a professional psychic who gives readings to clients and sometimes serves as a police consultant on unsolved crimes. This time Abby has attracted the unwelcome attention of a Mafia don who wants her to use her psychic skills to help him locate his missing wife--or else. But when Abby finds her, she learns that the don's wife doesn't want to be found. To top it all off, Dutch and his cop friend Milo are investigating the Mafioso, and they want Abby out of the mix, but pronto. If Abby doesn't figure out a way to keep everybody happy--and quick--she may soon either join the ranks of the missing or lose the love of her life. Half the fun of these books is the author's description of how it feels to receive messages from the psychic realm. Abby's intuition is a finely tuned instrument; the reader gets the feeling that it reflects Laurie's own gift. The other half lies in the snappy plot twists and the interactions of the beautifully drawn and very believable characters--Dutch and Milo, Abby's laconic ex-hippie handyman Dave, her cutie-pooch dachshund Eggy and her bullheaded sister Cat, and of course "the crew," the assembly of beyond-the-veil entities from whom Abby gets her messages. Then there are her clients, some of whom have become close friends and all of whom have convoluted backstories and intriguing reasons for consulting a psychic. And most conpellingly, there is Abby herself: a talented, sometimes-funny, sometimes-troubled individual working hard to come to grips with her own abilities and define her place in the world. Readers will find themselves caught up in Abby's ongoing adventures and looking, as I did, for more books in the series. Best bet for a cold winter's night with a warm comforter and a hot drink!Read full review
