I love Five In A Row (AKA - FIAR). It is a great unit study curriculum using classic children's books for 4-8 year olds. This is the first volume of 3 (actually 4, but you can only get volume 4 in digital format, now). My daughter who is 4 absolutely loves it. She has learned so much already and all you do, really, is talk about the books you read (you read them for "five days in a row"). The only problem, sometimes, is finding some of the books (some are older or out of print). You might have to do a little searching and definitely get to know your local library workers, but it's TOTALLY worth it! There is also a younger program called Before Five In A Row and an older one called Beyond Five In A Row. I haven't used these myself, but I have heard great things about them, as well. I would HIGHLY recommend this book!Read full review
I love everything and dislike nothing. After using Five in a Row for 4 weeks now, my son is noticing the different mediums used in illustrations, recognizes the Eiffel Tower, commented that some red white and blue stripes looked like the french flag (no stars, so not ours!)commenting on authors' use of repetition in their writing, and wanting to write his own books. He has been exposed to cultures in China, Appalachia, and France, and this is only the 4th week! I would also recommend the Five in a Row Cookbook to add a culinary component. These recipes are not "kid" recipes. As one mom said, you won't find "ANts on a Log." I have made egg rolls and fried rice, quiche, and apple turnovers. I'm loving it and so is my husband! Worth every penny.Read full review
I love that this product, (homeschool curriculum), is so easy to use and has all the catagories to lead an inexperienced homeschooler into meaningful times with their children. I was also impressed with it's ability to teach educators how to use any story to teach from since my children are autistic and sometimes have very intense interests. I can use that to my advanage to instruct on a variety of subjects from the vast information that is simply around us all the time, I would recommend this curriculum to anyone with small children who are able to listen to a story and carry on a dialogue of any kind with an adult. This is all it takes to begin teaching, and you may realize, much to your amazement, that you've been teaching your children/students all along.
I purchased this book to use as my main homeschool curriculum with my 5 year old. It was delivered to my house within 3 days of purchase, allowing me plenty of time to get organized for our school year. Five in a Row volume 1 is a delightful way to bring literature to life with young children. We will definitely be ordering the other volumes soon!
This is a very comprehensive unit study book based on classical children's literature. It is geared to be used by a homeschooling parent with children ages 5 - 7. In the units you choose and read the same children's book every day for five days. Each day you choose and address a different subject which can be studied based on that particular book. The subjects are: math, science, social studies, geography and art. I highly recommend this book to homeschool parents of young children. I feel that because of the repetition and different perspectives offered on the book being studied, the young child can really learn to be a more critical thinker and evaluator. Also they can begin to see the world around them in a much more comprehensive way.
