For fitness purposes, this monitor is impractical. You read the heart rate by pressing one finger on the sensor and waiting for a few seconds. The instructions say 5 seconds. It can take longer). This has two disadvantages that render the monitor useless for serious fitness purposes. 1. You have to interrupt your workout without a cooldown (not recommended). 2. By the time the heart rate number appears, it is no longer accurate, since you had to interrupt your routine for at least 5 seconds. For example: Try holding your finger on the sensor for 5+ seconds while your using the ellipse or running on a track or a treadmill without stopping.

Good watch that doesn't require a chest band for heart rate measurements. You might want to buy two, because changing the battery is difficult, and the cost isn't that much different.
