I purchased the book, Pedagogy of the Oppressed a couple months ago. I started taking an independent study "Philosophy and Education" class at the beginning of the second quad of the semester. This was a required text for that course. Initially, I was hesitant to read it, what-with-it in essence being a "text book." I LOVED the book! It promotes thinking for one's self, creating TRUE democracies, and joining in with those that are "oppressed" through genuine solidarity. I was nervous about reading a text that would be really challenging since the class I was reading it for was an Independent Study course. (There is typically much less help and feedback involved with this type of course, as opposed to lecture courses and labs.) The book, although being very smart and very inspiring was not so difficult to read that I missed the point Freire is making. Great book. Beautiful concepts. Stimulating. If you read it, it will revolutionize your thinking, so be careful! :)Read full review
An excellent book for those wondering about the relationship between culture and educationg. Freire has great insights into both.
