Since this was a different take on the run-of-the-mill vampire movies, it "sucked" me into the story right away and held my interest until the end. The acting was decent, not Oscar worthy because the plot didn't lend itself to a wide range of emotions, but the actors did the job nicely. Blood and guts, especially at the end, round out the story for die-hard blood-thirsty fans, in addition to an actual plot. Sometimes vampire movies are too simplistic and the vampires just go around wreaking havoc. That was the case here as well - can't get away from that aspect if you're telling a vampire story - but the William Defoe and Ethan Hawke characters (as good guys) were "fleshed out" enough to make one care what happens, as well as Sam O'Neill's portrayal of the bad guy. All in all, a fun romp into a possible future world of humans and vampires.Read full review

Ethan Hawke stars in this futuristic world where vampires rule and humans are in short supply. Seems the vampires have either killed off all the humans or have converted them to vampires and now the future of the vampire race is in doubt. Hawke along with a group of other 'scientists' are close to finding a synthetic version of human blood but they are running out of time. This movie offers a different view into the world of vampires and humans. It is well written and the acting is very good. Hawke, Neill and Dafoe all give very good performances in this one. The Movie Stars: Ethan Hawke, Paul Sonkkila, Sam Neill, Vince Colosimo and Willem Dafoe There are a few things that could be improved but overall it was worth watching.
this movie gives a new twist on vampires. the world is now populated by vampires. 0nly 10-15% left on earth are human so the vampires are running out of food and desparetly looking for a blood substitute. ethan hawk plays a vampire who is looking for a substitute and is human friendly which if he caught has sever punishment. ethan hawk, after meeting william defoe, finds not a substitute but an actual cure to turn vampires human again. the only problem is, how do they convince the vampire population to take the cure? Sam neil plays the head fvampire/villian as well.
Let's face it. If you're a vampire geek, you're gonna watch this movie regardless of what anyone says in their review. BUT before you do go and pay for the DVD keep in mind in this movie the VAMPIRE's rule and there is no 'secret society' of blood suckers. I loved the begining! I loved the idea of vampire's living or should I say 'dying' a every day normal life (during the night). The shortage of 'blood' was a great asset, but what was a real downer was the so call 'cure'. The whole idea of the sun being the antidote for being a vampire was just a little bit to much to bare. I Loved the make-up, the gore, but I just couldn't bite into the end of the story. You'll be entertained for the most part, but in the end you'll walk away feeling unfulfilled.
Alternative plot from vampires perspective. Gruesome ending but still kinda funny.
