  • Relatable and entertaining story told with lovely word-pictures

Beautiful and descriptive prose for telling a story of seeking freedom, family, home, belonging, believing. As the author acknowledges, I see hints of Huckleberry Finn and Charles Dickens classic stories. Would highly recommend for other readers.

  • A beautiful, haunting American tale

This book was my choice for our book club as it reminded me of my dad and uncle. Because of Covid, it was put on the back burner for 2 years, but was the first book when we started our book club back up. If you like an American tale, this is a great book as the story flows well through the years it covers. We have one member, who is not from the US, and she really didn't "get" the book.

  • Great title

Since my eyes have been bad and I need surgery, I offered this book to a friend of mine just a few days ago. Yesterday she informed me she is almost 3/4 way through and really is enjoying this book. I can hardly wait until I have my good vision back so I can read it after she is done with it.
