My 5/5 rating on picture quality for the Sony HX9v is mainly for its video 1080p60 capabilities. JPEGs are good but inferior to those from the decade old Ricoh GR Digital. There are 2 major cons for the HX9v, a lack of manual functions and the Sony G lens essentially is a fixed aperture design! The camera changes aperture by introducing automatically a neutral density filter as required. I bought the HX9V for its exceptional video capabilities. Try to find another p/s with a 1080p at 60 frames per second. You will be hard pressed to find that even on DSLRs, like my GH1 or GH2. Second, the camera has an exceptional active image stabilizer which mimicks a steadycam (especially at wide angles). I also like the 920k high resolution LCD screen. The HX9v is my video travel cam (displacing the GH1/GH2) Interestngly enough, later product iterations from Sony do not equal the capabilities of the HX9v, with the exception of the new RX100 (but then this is a $650 camera). So newer does not translate to better. At current market prices (sub $300), the HX9V is a real bargain.Read full review
Excellent little camera. And that is my biggest complaint. It is a small camera for me with my big hands. That is my only complaint though. Takes beautiful pictures and very easy to use with not a ton of extra features to clog up the experience. I have a eye fi card in it and it works great. I taKe pictures of my pets and the photos are on my computer by the time I sit down to view them.
It's a very nice camera, I would of preferred it to allow the user to have natural(real colour) representation in Auto mode. To get proper unprocessed colour one needs to run the camera in Manual mode. Sometimes picture looks over saturated etc with Auto mode. 16x Zoom is excellent as well as stability in the shot. Video is excellent, rivaling pricey 1080P dedicated video cameras, and overall picture if you include Auto mode is very good. There are quite a few options in manual mode to satisfy the budding photographer. Some might find this camera a little bulky for a point and shoot but I have relatively big hands so it fits perfectly for me, feels like a traditional camera. I'd rate it 4.5/5.
I mostly bought this camera for it's long zoom, best in class video quality in 1080p, and nice features, like panorama and fast burst mode. but the image processing is very Bad making pictures look like watercolor when viewing above 80% of the size. hope sony will release firmware update to reduce the image processing.
The primary reason I bought the camera was to seriously downsize my photo equipment for my recent trip to Thailand, from where I just returned. I decided that carrying a heavy DSLR on my shoulder for 2 weeks would be more than I was willing to undertake. Plus, I wanted a wide angle and long focal length in one lens which the Sony has. The focal length is totally impressive. I believe the quality of the photos are excellent. I spent some time going thru the manual before leaving on my trip so I felt comfortable using it. My first negative comment is about the manual which is a digital file. That makes it a real pain to read. One has the choice of either reading it on the computer monitor or printing the pages, both are a hassle while traveling. With the features this camera has it is absolutely essential to read and study at least some parts of the manual. For example, learning the GPS feature. Secondly, I agree with the other reviewers about the overpowered flash. There needs to be a way to adjust the output. Strangely enough I didn't have that many times that I needed the flash. It does quite well with available light. Thirdly, the flash should have been located someplace else on the camera body but after a few shots with the flash I learned to keep my left index finger on the base of the lens barrel. Lastly, the Sony will not save files in the RAW format. The image stabilization is very effective both in still and HD video mode. Auto focus is very good. The camera produces very accurate colors. I like my colors to pop a little so I am quite please with that feature. The 3" LCD produces absolutely beautiful, clear colors. The HD video is abolutely phenomenal. That is to be expected because Sony is not a newcomer to the world of video. If this camera is compared to the Canon G11, which I own and have used a lot, there is no comparison. The Sony excels in almost every category, plus it is much smaller than the Canon. The Sony does not fit into a shirt pocket but easily fits into a coat pocket or purse. Sony has an excellent camera in this model so I hope they make the suggested changes and keep it in their inventory.Read full review
This was a great purchase. I now grab this little camera to place in my pocket for those times when I "might" need a camera because cell phone cameras have not reached the low light quality that I desire yet. Good battery life and I love the in camera guide. I wish all cameras had such a guide.

Replaced my old Sony H20 with this unit , nicely featured well designed and very atrative BUT picture quality not quite as good, not as crisp or have the pop the H20 had of course the older camera is sort of a legend as proven by used prices today....although I am not saying the HX9V it is not a good camera just not excellent in my book and I own and have owned several cameras of all kinds I rate it above average though.
I have been using cameras for years, I bought 3D cameras from some other brands and finally came up with this camera HX9V. This camera is made in Japan and it is filled with a bundle of features. Out of the 3D cameras I used I can say that this is the only camera that has so much of features when comparing with its contemporary 3D cameras from other brands. The photo quality is amazing both in day and night. 16X optical zooming adds so much value to the camera. Sony G lens is can be credited for its super quality pictures. This has the ability of capturing 3D sweep Panorama and 3D still pictures. When I went to the market its price was bit high but ebay always gave me the best offer. This can be even used by a professional and almost can be compared with a SLR.
Very easy to use well-made graphical Interface, with high quality tactile buttons. Easy to use Macro functions. Shoots really nice sixty frames per second 1080P Video. Has really good Stable shot abilities, with Quick focusing and great autofocus. This is a Fun and feature rich dense camera in a lightweight comfortable form factor.

The photos this camera takes are impressive enough, but the videos are drop dead gorgeous. The colors are vivid, the details are sharp and the audio is excellent, even for music. It is occasionally hard to find items in the menu system, but that is about the only negative. The zoom range is impressive and the MP count allows for nice enlargements. If you want to videos, buy a couple extra batteries, so you can start the videos on a fresh battery.
