i needed a camera that was smaller than my small fuji 10x mini slr , i liked the fuji works fine but wanted something more portable for the spur of moment shots and a backup knock around camera i could easily keep in my pocket, the canon fits the bill nicely and does everything i would want it to do, this camera offers a lot of versitality for its size. other brands are giving it a run for its money but for a used camera it seems to have some sturdiness the others may not have.i do wish this camera and others of this kind use more metal for the zoom gears for longevity in case it gets dropped but i guess thats one of the tradeoffs; all in all a very nice camera, good amount of features for a great little backup camera
While 10 megapixels isn't high by today's standards I have made very large prints from this camera that look better than cameras with twice this rated resolution. My first one was lost (stolen?) and after testing several others I purchased a used 890 to replace it. Only downside is no HD video, but I got this for stills. The lens quality is superb and the color sense is less blown out than Canons usually are.

Has excellent manual controls for those who want to go beyond automatic mode. Images are very good. Macro feature is excellent. Battery life is excellent. Easy of use is average. Weight is a little heavy and the shape of the camera, although asthetically pleasing, is conducive to dropping the camera. I lost one of these cameras, but liked it so much I bought another.
I previously purchased a Sony Cybershot when they first came onto the scene. It cost me well over $800 for a 3.3 megapixel camera and that was top of the line at the time. The Sony served me well for many years but as I was shopping at a Sam's club, I had a chance to look at the Canon SD890 and decided it was time for an upgrade. I spent several days searching the E-Bay camera's for the price I wanted to pay and finally the right price came up and the purchase was made, saving me over more than a $100 on similar E-Bay cameras and more the $200 on the Sam's Club price. This Camera has more than exceeded my expectations and to be honest it is a little intimidating with all the options that it has but as you use the camera and consult the manual things get a lot better. My camera came brand new and was not a refurbished model and so it had a 32 bit card which is almost useless if you are taking more than 6 pictures at a time, so I also purchased an 8 gbyt card which is no problem for the camera to handle and can now take about 1200 pictures at the best setting or over 6000 pictures at the normal setting. The camera is easy to use, small enough to fit in a shirt pocket and the pictures so far are outstanding to say the least and that is in automatic mode. I can't wait to experiment with some of the other modes such as stitching (wide angle panoramic) color switch (changing the color of a car for instance to a different shade, can't wait to show my rich brother a brand new stable of different colored mustangs that I now own). This camera is well worth the money I payed and is much much more than the Sony for less than a third of the price that I paid for it. Just goes to show how much tech has advanced and I hope this camera wont be old before I use all the options. My only complaint is the fact that the manual is small(shirtpocket size) and so it's a little difficult to read, other than that no complaints and I'm very happy with the purchase and also the seller and his pricing.Read full review
This is be my third Canon PowerShot Digital ELPH SD890 IS Camera. I love it's quality, size, versatility and reliability. The first I gave to my husband after he swam across a river while camping. Believe it or not the camera worked perfectly, after completely drying. So I purchased the 2nd for myself and enjoyed it for many years, until it recently (within the last 8 months) began to malfunction and provide less than desirable photos. I decided to stick with this camera and purchase another since it's so light, easy to use( point & shoot), has a decent zoom and quick shutter speed to capture action shots. I am thrilled to have this fully functioning gem in my hands. By the way - all of the cameras were purchased on ebay. The first one was new, but the last two were in good, used condition.Read full review
