This was Sony's top line digicam a few years ago and its esy to see why. Solid Black Aluminum Chassis and body. 4.1 Megapixel CCD with an excellent HAD focusing system. Outstanding battery life from the NP-FM50 Camcorder Battery. This camera can take a licking and produce excellent digital pictures day-in and day-out. It is really a work-horse digicam that is built for the long term. If you are looking for a decent back-up or Ebay digicam, this camera fits the bill nicely. You can find one easily on Ebay in the $150-$175.00 rangein excellent condition that will easily giveyou 3-4 years of additional usage. The only negaitve is that it takes Memory Sticks and the camera is kind-of bulky and heavy whencompared to the latest generation of competing digicams. You can't go wrong with this camera as Sony engineered this one to last for a very long time. You can even add a Sony External Flash for even more flexibility and power.Read full review
This camera is actually a great starter camera which takes very nice pictures, even closeups in the macro mode. Outdoor pictures are even better than indoor pictures! The downside of this camera is movie shots are only about 30 seconds at a clip so I would not use this camera for video. Another downfall with this camera is it only accepts up to a 128mb memory card and will not accept anything larger. So if you like taking family pictures, outdoor pictures, (not fast moving sports pictures), if you'd like a good inexpensive camera to sell things on eBay with, then this would be a very good choice. I've used this model for a couple of years for this purpose myself & I had very good results with it.
I bought this as a first camera. I had no manual so I had to manually figure out all the adjustments and such. Since I never had a camera before, it took really great pictures. It takes videos too, but I didn't do such a good job because I was unfamiliar with the settings. I like that you can play the vids and pictures from the camera on a tv with the a/v output jack. My only complaint is I had to order a larger memory card, nobody seem to have memory cards that fit this camera exactly since It seems to be a slightly older camera than what's currently available. I would still recommend this camera, I quite happy with my purchase.
Excellent quality photographs Fairly easy to use, although not for a complete novice Would suggest buying a large memory stick (depends on the resolution you want) Has a fairly standard USB cable. I can use the same cable for my MP3 player and camera, which is useful GREAT close photographs You recharge the InfoLITHIUM M battery, so you don't burn through AA or AAA's like they are going out of fashion. Overall... I'd buy it again.
I have taken several shots with this camera in various kinds of lighting. From low light to very bright outdoor shots, this camera performs extremely well. It was in it's day, a top talent, and still is when compared to today's cameras that may cost a hundred dollars more. It operates very well as a point and shoot or if you desire to be in more control this camera is wonderful in various priority modes. Excellent placement of controls with a very intuitive menu system. I use the fine setting with +1 sharpness and get outstanding shots still today. Battery life is excellent as well. Movie mode by today's standards lacks a bit with limited resolution but certainly is easy to use for a quick movie. I think it is limited to 15 fps. Bottom line: shot in, shot out, this camera is very reliable with good metering and what I would say "bright colors".Read full review
I purchased this camera for my daughter because I own one as does my son and I love the convenience of the uploading, the sharing of memory sticks and the ease of using this camera. It is very easy to use, its not the lightest of digital cameras but the picures are phenomenal. The only drawback I see is the weight. I purchased mine brand new 3 years ago and am not looking for an upgrade at this time. I have other Sony products in my home for personel use and business use and am very happy with the products. This camera suits me fine at this point in time.I also purchased the wide angle lens and the telephoto lens as an additon. I feel it is an excellent camera for the value. This is my 2nd Digital Camera and I am very happy with my choice.
I bought this camera when it first came out, five years ago, & I never, ever had a problem with it (with CONSTANT use). It still works like a champ and I bought another for a backup for work. I plan on upgrading to a more sophisticated model for personal use (purely becaue photography has developed into a hobby), THIS camera is the reason digital photography became a hobby. It is easy to operate & completely user friendly. Any digital camera has a learning curve, but this one will become old hat in short order. It takes excellent close-ups, so it is a very good choice for anyone marketing a product. You can pick these up, unbelievabley cheap, on eBay because they have aged out of the Sony line up, NOT because they are a poor product. The camera is sturdy. It is a wonderful size, not itty bitty, but big enough to grip and handle without being cumbersome. If you are looking a reliable camera that takes great pictures, at a rock bottom price, this is it. Great for beginners, perfect for general use, you won't be disappointed.Read full review
There is Nothing better than a SONY. This is a Great Digital Camera. I have always been a Lover of Sony Cameras. They are easy to use and have the features of a Professional Camera. This camera can record, copy pictures to PC, Take and develop pictures at any store off memory card and with the 6x zoom and 4.0 mega pixels, you can get the best in pictures taken. You won't be disapointed. It has Mega Movie EX another Great feature for the Sony Cyber-shot-S85. It is a Beautiful Looking camera and Built thoug with metal construction. Takes a beating and stands tall! I would advise anyone to purchase it!
Have been around camera's all my life. This SONY was my first digital, bought new four years ago. It produces outstanding images. Even an electronic klutz like me was able to figure it out. I do not like the newer, skinny, lightweight cameras. The SONY has some weight and bulk to it that makes it more like shooting a Leica or Nikon film camera. The DSC-S85 has more features than most people will use. It is totally dependable. I continue to get comments on my photos when compared to other digital images. I have no interest in a newer camera and frankly, if this one breaks, I will probably go looking for another DSC-S85 on the used market. Well here we are a few years later and I just bought another DSC-S85. And it works as well as my original and takes excellent photos even though I now have some 12-megapix cameras. The Zeiss lens in this camera is the secret. This is STILL one of the most dependable, excellent, small cameras I have seen. Aug. 2110Read full review
My experience with these old Sony cameras led me to buy 4 of these DSC-S85s recently. I will probably end up giving them to my grandkids. I first owned a Sony DSC-S75 back in 2001 and still have it after taking about 8000 pictures. It has been dropped, it has been under water a couple of times and it still keeps going. I have also used a DSC-S85 at my office since 2002 so I have lots of experience with this line of cameras. In addition to being rugged, they take great pictures because of the fine Carl Zeiss lens. Don't be fooled by the fact they only have 4 megapixels, that is overrated by advertisers. My granddaughter used my old S75 to take pictures for a 4-H project and enlarged one to 11x14 which won at our local county fair and went on to place high at the state fair. Some will also say the lens on these cameras is wobbly. Yes, they are for some reason, but that does not affect results at all. These cameras can be used for good results set on automatic or you can control aperture, shutter and focus if you want to get creative. You can also get great close-ups with the macro setting. One of the main drawbacks to these cameras is that the old style memory sticks are no longer being made. They can be found on eBay but the price is high. These are great cameras but they are not a camera to be used if you want to shoot quickly. They take a while to get to shooting mode and then there is a slight delay when you press the shutter. If you can live with that you will get great results. Another nice thing about the cameras is the battery life. They come with a rechargeable battery that just keeps going and holds a charge very well. Batteries and chargers are still readily available for them.Read full review
