Your vehicle’s accessory drive sits at the front of the engine. This drive includes all of the components that your engine and vehicle need to power systems, such as power steering, electrical, cooling, and air conditioning. Depending on the age of your vehicle, you may have multiple V-belts. However, since the mid-1980s, most vehicles use a single belt to drive all of these at once. It’s called a serpentine belt.
The serpentine belt is a wide, grooved rubber belt that wraps around the pulleys on the engine to spin the accessories at the required speed. Accessories is the term for everything that needs power to run but isn’t the engine. This includes the water pump, the power steering pump, and the alternator.
While most engines use one serpentine belt, there are a few that have a smaller single-item belt, typically for the AC compressor. Regardless of style, the belts eventually wear out. When they fail, your engine can overheat, and you might be left stranded on the roadside.
Belt construction consists of an EPDM rubber belt sandwiching a center layer of nylon cords for strength and resistance. Most belts are ribbed on one side, although some use a dual-rib construction. This is found on GM’s 2014 (and later) Gen V LT-series engines. While available in several rib counts, most serpentine belts are six-rib, and single component belts are usually three- or four-rib.
How long does a serpentine belt last?
Most belts are good for between 50,000 and 100,000 miles. This varies by manufacturer and driving scenarios. If you drive less than 10,000 miles annually, replace the belt about every four years. The rubber breaks down with age as well as mileage.

Early Signs of Serpentine Belt Failure

Inspecting the belt is the best way to check for wear. The ribs should be intact. There should be no missing chunks, frays, or cracks.
The most common warning sign is a belt that squeals or whines. It is a high-pitched squealing that occurs at startup and during engine revving. After the belt is severely worn, the noise becomes constant. This can also happen when the belt tensioner is worn out.
Other signs of wear can be found on the belt. Examine the belt for wear such as burned or melted spots, chunks of ribs missing, micro-cracks on either side, shiny spots on the belt, and frayed edges. Even a small fiber on the edge is a problem.

How a Serpentine Belt Tensioner Works

Old-school V-belts move the accessory to tighten the belt. Serpentine belts have a single tensioner. These are dynamic tensioners, meaning that they have an elastomer or spring that presses a pulley against the belt. As the engine spins, the tensioner compensates for sudden increases in rpm. This helps eliminate strain on the belt so that it lasts longer and doesn’t jump off the pulleys.
How long does the serpentine belt tensioner last?
In most cases, the tensioner lasts 40,000 to 70,000 miles. The tensioner is typically replaced with the serpentine belt, but you may need to replace the tensioner more often than the belt itself.

Early Signs of Serpentine Belt Tensioner Failure

Just like a belt, the most common sign of a bad tensioner is squealing. This can be due to the belt slipping or the pulley on the tensioner going out. The squeal of a failing pulley bearing has a metallic quality. Keep in mind that there are several pulleys and bearings on the front drive of the engine, so you need to pinpoint which pulley is causing the issue.
Use a little spray lubricant on the pulley at the bearings to test if the pulley is the issue and to locate which pulley is making the noise. If it becomes quiet when you hit it with lube, it is failing and needs to be replaced.
How do you test serpentine belt tension?
Check the tensioner for mechanical function by pushing and pulling on the belt. A properly functioning tensioner should have about half-inch of play along the widest gap between pulleys. That’s 1/4-inch up and down from the center. If there's more than that, the tensioner is loose and should be replaced.
Can you drive with a cracked serpentine belt?
Yes, you can drive with a cracked serpentine belt, but its days are numbered. It should be replaced as soon as possible.
What happens if your serpentine belt breaks?
Ifthe belt breaks, the first thing you’ll notice is the steering becoming heavier as you lose power steering. If the AC compressor stops, cool air will stop blowing from the vents. Most engines use the serpentine belt to drive the water pump. This is the biggest concern. When your cooling system stops, your engine can overheat within minutes. Also, if the alternator stops generating electricity, your vehicle will operate solely off the battery.

Replacing Your Serpentine Belt and Tensioner

This DIY job takes less than 30 minutes on most vehicles.
You may need a special long-reach tool, but most engines use a 3/8-inch or 1/2-inch square drive (like a ratchet) to release the tension on the belt. Use the tool to move the tensioner and remove the old belt.
Wrap the new belt in the same routing as the original, release the tension, slip the belt over the tensioner, and re-engage the tensioner. Some vehicles have tensioners that are more difficult to reach, particularly on horizontally mounted engines, as the accessory drive is very close to the chassis. Any family car or SUV with front- or all-wheel-drive is likely to have a horizontally mounted engine.

When replacing the belt, we recommended replacing the tensioner and idler pulley (if equipped) at the same time.
