Many a stoplight hero has fallen victim to a sleeper, a seemingly non-threatening, low-spec sedan hiding a powerful secret under the hood. Popular with street racers for decades, they don’t come much sleepier than the 1962 Chevrolet Biscayne, recently listed for sale on eBay.

A two-door sedan in an appropriately unexciting shade of beige, this Chevy checks all the boxes for a classic sleeper. The Biscayne, the lowest spec of three full-size Chevrolet models offered at the time, was favored by fleets, cheapskates, and grandparents.

Stripped Down and Built for Speed
Its basic spec made the Biscayne a favorite of drag racers, not only because of its lower price but also its lower weight. Like the car featured here, it loses weight by skipping extra trim and creature comforts like power steering and brakes, and even a radio. There’s just a metal plate in the dash.

Lamar Walden Automotive of Atlanta, Ga.—a shop known for high performance since 1968—built the engine. It sports twin four-barrel carburetors - opens in new window or tab., a free-breathing air cleaner, MSD electronic ignition - opens in new window or tab., and an oversized Walker radiator to keep everything cool under pressure.

A True Original
While the engine and mechanical upgrades boost performance and reliability, the restoration stopped short of cosmetic enhancements. That adds to this car’s subtle appeal. The paint seems to be original, with just enough patina and minor battle scars to make it an ideal driver without fearing parking lot scrapes. With no evidence of rust, the car appears to be at least as solid as it was in 1962. Underneath, the chassis and frame were completely detailed and painted as part of its restoration.

The interior is all-original, like a time capsule from 1962. The front and rear cloth bench seats, carpets, and dashboard are rip-free.
