The 1974 Cadillac Eldorado convertible represented a pinnacle of “King of the Road” American motoring. The name “Eldorado” means “the golden one,” and Cadillac had bright and brilliant aspirations in mind when it introduced the Eldorado convertible for 1953 (debuting the wrap-around window in the process). It was the most luxurious iteration of the Standard of Excellence, and it was a sales hit.
By 1974, the Eldorado was one big boat, capitalizing on the “personal luxury” segment. A restored and gorgeous 1974 Eldorado convertible was recently listed on eBay Motors. The model’s sensible upgrades might put off some purists, but they make the car a lot easier to drive in 2017.
This 79,000-mile original Eldorado features knife-edge front and rear fenders, and standard skirts. The hardtops offered the then-popular “opera window,” which is obviously not a part of the convertible variant. The owner has rebuilt the electric top-motor and its assorted relays and cables—frequent failure points in older ragtops.
That’s not all he’s done. The Eldorado still boasts its original 8.2-liter, four-barrel-carb 501-cubic-inch V-8, with a column-shifted automatic.
