Yet, many members of the Early Ford V8 Club have a deeper affection for the 1940 Deluxe Coupe—like this fine example which sold on eBay. It’s widely viewed one of the best-looking cars to come from that era.
Designed by famed stylist Eugene Gregorie, the 1940 Deluxe Opera Coupe features beautifully curved fenders, a graceful tail with chevron-shaped taillights, and a long hood that flows back from a distinctive grille. Thanks to its timeless styling, the Coupe continues to be a strong favorite for restorers and hot rodders.

With its rugged framework and strong flathead V8 engine, the 1940 Coupe also goes down in history as a beloved workhorse for delivering moonshine in the southeastern United States. Those in “the business” found the model to be the ideal means of transporting goods from the mountains to the big city, staying one step ahead of the dreaded revenuers. With only slight modifications, the car’s large trunk could hold up to 130 gallons of so-called white lightning, and the rear suspension could be strengthened to prevent sagging. There was also speed equipment available to increase the output of the standard 60-horsepower or optional 85-horsepower V8.

The 1940 Deluxe Opera Coupe offered on eBay at no reserve is described as an older body-off restoration. The photos showcase a car that holds true to the beauty of the original, with just a few added features such as a grill guard and fog lamps up front, a driver’s side spotlight, AM radio, heater, bumper wing tips, and a Ford accessory exhaust tip.

The car is powered by the 85-horsepower flathead V8 and the standard 3-speed manual transmission with column shifter. The interior appears correct, right down to its handsome art-deco style bakelite gauge cluster. It also features rare folding rear jump seats.
Fords underwent a full redesign for the 1941 model year, with a wider stance and fenders more integrated into the bodywork, which nearly covered the running boards. The new Fords realized good sales, but then with the United States entering World War II in December 1941, the company halted both its car and truck lines in early February 1942. Those plants were then quickly converted to begin production of both vehicles and planes necessary for the war effort.
