Ford nicknamed the 2003 SVT Mustang Cobra “Terminator” because of its potent supercharged engine. The ’03 Cobra convertible recently for sale on eBay is a well-maintained example with low mileage and smart aftermarket upgrades.

Mustang Milestones

Ford founded its Special Vehicle Team (SVT) in 1991 to produce high-performance versions of select Ford vehicles. It released the SVT Mustang Cobra and SVT F-150 Lightning - opens in new window or tab. pickup in 1993. SVT versions of the Ford Focus - opens in new window or tab. and Contour followed.

SVT’s Cobra was the launchpad for several Mustang milestones.
The Cobra Rs were made, in theory, for competition use. But some speculators parked them with just delivery miles, waiting for their values to rise.

In 2001, John Coletti - opens in new window or tab., SVT’s chief engineer, believed the Cobra’s naturally aspirated mod motor had run its course. In the hunt for more power, the team applied lessons learned from the supercharged 1999 F-150 Lightning and added an Eaton Roots-style supercharger to the Cobra’s engine. Output jumped from 320 horsepower in the naturally aspirated engine to 390 horses and 390 pound-feet of torque.

Terminator is Born

Below the blower, the ’03 SVT Mustang Cobra engine was revised with a cast-iron block and forged connecting rods - opens in new window or tab. to withstand the increased cylinder pressure. It also added better breathing cylinder heads - opens in new window or tab., dished pistons to lower compression, a new camshaft tuned for low-end torque, and a water-to-air intercooler - opens in new window or tab..

Magazine tests in the day found the new SVT Cobra’s performance nearly equal to the Cobra R, with 4.5-second zero-to-60 times and quarter-miles in less than 13 seconds. Car and Driver said:
Copious torque provides effortless passing acceleration. A downshift jams slower vehicles deep into the right-side mirror with an exciting roar from the exhaust … and a food-blender-like whine from the blower.

Three Owners

The SVT Mustang Cobra for sale on eBay looks clean inside and out—a testament to having only 89,300 miles via three owners who garaged it. The seller says the car has been well-maintained and never raced.

The Cobra is equipped with a number of aftermarket upgrades, including:
The owner also reports that the Cobra recently received fresh synthetic fluid in the engine, transmission, and differential. It has a new serpentine belt - opens in new window or tab. and OEM Ford cooling hoses - opens in new window or tab. and coolant.
The SVT Mustang Cobra’s $25,000 Buy-It-Now price seems reasonable compared to recent auction prices. Given the straight-line and road-holding performance you would expect from a supercharged SVT Cobra, this is a lot of car for the money.
