The Defender 90 4x4—equipped with a four-cylinder, 2.5-liter TDI engine—enjoyed life in a relatively dry and gentle climate. And it just received a major restoration before being shipped to the United States.
The stylish '89 Defender 90 was up for auction this week on eBay. It sold faster than expected. The deal closed on Monday afternoon.
The US-based seller states that the turbo-diesel 200Tdi engine and manual transmission “run very strong, and will do 65 MPH on the highway.” Rememver, we're talking about a customized 1989 off-road vehicle. They can be relatively slow but are happy 65 MPH or so.
The 200Tdi engine is known as one of the first mass-produced, small-capacity direct-injection diesel engines. It’s a true workhorse. Besides, diesels offer loads of low-end torque and commonly require less maintenance.
This fully restored LR Defender 90 showcases 246,290 kilometers on the odometer. That’s about 153,000 miles. (Since this vehicle originated in Europe, it’s still a left-hand-driver but the speedometer and odometer read in kilometers.)

The Defender 90’s rear side bench seats reflect the manufacturer’s de facto seating arrangement. But they aren’t locked in place. They can be easily removed to stow additional cargo—perfect if you want to create your overlanding 4x4 dream machine.
This delightful Defender 90 has electronic locks added. They can be engaged with a key fob. Note: The back door still needs to be locked with an old-fashioned key.

“This Defender is ready to go. It’s rare to find this combination,” stated the seller. eBay users responded by closing the deal earlier than expected.
