When the weather gets hot, you rely on the vehicle’s air conditioner to cool the interior efficiently. If that’s not happening, the AC system could just be low on refrigerant - opens in new window or tab.—an issue you can quickly solve by recharging the system.

What Is AC Refrigerant?
All air conditioners use the same basic process:
- Refrigerant gas is compressed to a liquid and forced through the evaporator, a small radiator located inside the cabin behind the dash. The refrigerant flows through the tubes, and cabin air blows through the fins.
- As the liquid expands, it cools the air blowing through the fins.
- The gas is very hot as it flows to the condenser (another small radiator) in front of the engine coolant radiator, where the outside air cools it.
- Then, the gas travels back into the compressor, starting the process over for as long as the AC is on.

You must use the right refrigerant; otherwise your system could be severely damaged.
The most common AC refrigerant - opens in new window or tab. is R-134A, which is being replaced by R-1234YF or HFO-1234YF. These may sound like secure passwords, but they are newer versions of R-134A.
These gasses (and their matching PAG oils) are incompatible—you cannot mix them. Doing so will lock up the system. But this will not be an issue if you use the correct gas for your AC system.
R12 systems need conversion to R134A, which requires a new dryer, and evaporator, and new hoses—as well as flushing the system of the old PAG oil. Conversion kits - opens in new window or tab. are available on eBay.
Symptoms That the AC Needs Recharging
While there are numerous possible issues with an AC system, our focus here is on the refrigerant charge. There are a few signs that the charge is low.

Single gauge sets like this one only show the low-pressure side. They work just fine for most DIYers.
The engine belts drive the AC compressor with a clutch on the front. When you turn the AC on, the clutch should engage, and you will see the front of the compressor spinning. If the clutch does not kick on, the charge is likely too low.
A pressure switch is on or near the dryer, typically mounted on the firewall or radiator core support. It may have two or three wires. You can bypass the switch by jumping the two wires with a small jumper lead. If the compressor kicks on, the charge is low.
Finally, your system may be overcharged if the compressor is running but not cooling. There is a sweet spot for the refrigerant—too high or low will cause the system not to cool. You’ll need a set of AC gauges to know for sure.
What Do You Need to Recharge Your Car's AC?
The best way to recharge a car's AC is to use a set of complete gauges that connect to both the high and low sides of the system, with a third port for the refrigerant. You can also use a single-gauge hose that connects only to the low side and a can of gas.

Some kits do not have a gauge at all. People sometimes call these “suicide cans” because you have no idea of the pressure the system has, and the can may explode. We do not recommend these.
Your gauges must be set up to match the type of refrigerant your system has. Older R12 ports differ from modern R-134A and R-1234YF, so you need the right ones when recharging a car's AC system. Most vehicles built after 1994 use R-134A - opens in new window or tab. or a variant.
How to Charge the Air Conditioner
Never add gas to the high side, only the low side. This is very important. Keeping this in mind, follow these steps to recharge the system:
- With the engine off, connect the lines to the system. The high side is typically marked with a large red cap, and the low side is usually a smaller blue cap. The caps are part of the system’s seal, so do not leave them off. This is the single most common cause of leaks in AC systems. If you have a dual gauge set, connect both.
- Start the engine. Turn on the AC to max cool, max fan, and set it to recirculate. Make a note of the outside ambient temperature.
- If the system is too low for the compressor to operate, use the jumper lead to make it run. This will speed up the charging process.
- If using dual gauges when recharging a car's AC system, open both red and blue valves to check the pressures.

On this 1990s Chevy truck, the low side port is on the hardline coming off the AC compressor. The caps are critical to the system’s seal.
Recommended Pressures
The following are the recommended pressures for relative ambient temperature when recharging a car's AC system:
A properly charged system should operate in these ranges at various ambient temperatures.
- If you use a low-side-only gauge set, refer to the low-side pressures in the above chart. Notice that the low side pressure should not exceed 55 psi. If using a two-gauge set, close the high-side valve.
- Once you have noted the pressures, open the valve to add refrigerant. The can should be upright, as you want gas—not liquid—to charge the system. Once you open the valve, the gas will flow into the system.
- The can will get very cold. Shake the can every 10 seconds to ensure the gas flows well. Do not hold the can upside-down.
- Watch the gauges. The low side can jump to 100 psi or more as you fill it, but it should drop quickly as the system functions.
- Close the fill valve and watch the gauges. If they settle on the correct range, then you are done. The air coming out of the vents should be much colder now.
- Shut off the engine.
- Disconnect the lines from the ports (they may be very hot, so be careful) and reinstall the caps. DO NOT forget the caps.

The best option when recharging a car's AC system is a two-gauge set like this, which shows both the high and low side.
Charged Up
Your system is now fully charged and should function correctly for a long time. AC systems should be used regularly, so run the compressor at least once a month for about 30 minutes to keep the oil and refrigerant moving. This helps maintain the seals and lubricates the moving parts.
