The annual SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) Show - opens in new window or tab. kicks off next week in Las Vegas. That’s where and when the auto world explores the latest trends in aftermarket products—and feasts its eyes on hundreds of outrageous modified vehicles. Many of those vehicles are showcased in vendor booths, helping to lure in potential buyers for a few days in Vegas. But what happens to those cool car builds after SEMA - opens in new window or tab.?
Some end up for sale on eBay—like this wide-body Ford Mustang - opens in new window or tab., which was built for the Ford display at the 2012 SEMA. It was a collaboration with Forgiato - opens in new window or tab., the custom-wheel manufacturer based in Los Angeles, and TS Designs, a specialist in wide-body modifications.
A wide-body car uses panels to widen the wheel wells. The main goal is to make space for wider tires for more contact of rubber on the asphalt. The base coupe calls for a tire size of 235/50 on an 18-inch wheel—resulting in a tire-section width measuring 235 millimeters. But with the wide-body Mustang, with a rear 335/25 tire on a 22-inch wheel, you get a tire that’s four inches wider. To compliment the look of the wheel wells that flare out, many opt to get side skirts to lower the body panels, as well as wider bumpers to complete the look.
The builders didn’t stop with the body mods. They filled in the rear quarter-panel windows and then sprayed the car for a matte finish.
