Off-Road Royalty

In the 1960s, Japanese motorcycle manufacturers announced themselves in mighty fashion on the world’s racing circuits. As the decade drew to a close, they began to respond to new demands for rugged off-road machines—especially in the US.

1968 saw the launch of the Honda Mini Trail Z50 - opens in new window or tab., a very small bike but a great sales success. Yamaha followed with its Mini Enduro in 1971, which looked like a scaled-down version of a full-size bike, with serious suspension and equipment. Two years later, Honda debuted the XR75, the first off-road bike that was ready to go straight out of the box. Knobby tires - opens in new window or tab. and sturdy long-travel suspension all came standard. It even had number boards for racing.
The XR had a lightweight, single-loop frame and an eager 72-cc engine, giving it a top speed of around 40 mph. It was simple, sleek, and capable, and it soon earned a reputation for toughness. It was the dream bike of every motor-curious kid, and it remained popular as an off-road toy long after the competition had surpassed it.

“A Brand-New 1974 Bike”

The 1974 Honda XR75 recently listed on eBay might be the most pristine example on sale today. It’s offered by Premium Auto of Pompano Beach, Fla., and in photos, it looks absolutely flawless. Matt Okon of Premier Auto didn’t pull any punches when describing it. He said:
It’s insane. Just like looking at a brand new 1974 bike.

The machine belonged to a Premier Auto customer for years. Acquiring it meant playing the long game. Matt explained:
He didn’t want to sell it. It had been expertly restored by Steve Combs of Mikes MiniTrail Restorations - opens in new window or tab. and then placed in his collection, where it was on display for some years.
Matt had to be patient, checking in with the owner now and then, emphasizing his interest. Eventually, Matt’s persistence paid off. He enjoyed keeping the bike around just to look at it, but the time has come to give it a new home.

Ready to Ride Or Admire

As Matt explained, the XR’s motor was completely rebuilt by renowned expert Scott Stewart of Stewart’s Cycle - opens in new window or tab. in Jonesboro, Ark. The engine doesn’t appear to have held any oil or fuel since the rebuild, Matt said. The bike is titled, and according to Matt, an afternoon of nut-and-bolt checking and some fresh fluids will have it up and running. Unless, of course, you prefer to keep it in its current, showroom-perfect condition, with the whiskers still on the brand-new tires.

It holds a very special place in the hearts of motorcycle enthusiasts, meaning demand for outstanding examples like this one will only grow.
