Every few years, Mercedes AMG releases a so-called Black Series edition of a Mercedez-Benz coupe. Unlike some “special edition” designations, Black Series enhancements are not merely cosmetic, but rather a major performance makeover of an already potent AMG car.
The 2008 Black Series CLK 63 AMG recently listed on eBay Motors is an extraordinary specimen with only 600 miles on the odometer. According to the seller, there’s not another CLK 63 AMG Black Series with fewer miles. This CLK 63, an example of what it is likely the last normally-aspirated AMG Black Series car, checks all the boxes. It has 500 horsepower, can reach a blistering top speed of 186 miles per hour, and sprints to 60-mph in 4.3 seconds. This beast is finished with silver metallic paint, beautifully offsetting its black interior. The eBay Motors Buy-It-Now price was $149,990.

Enhancements to the Black Series model add width and girth to the low-profile CLK coupe. The enormous fender flares and abundant carbon fiber—as well as the deletion of the rear seat—gives it a somewhat sinister feel. But no matter how much horsepower is added and carbon fiber bestowed upon the AMG Black Series, this car is still a subtle, elegant Mercedes-Benz CLK Class.

When compared to modern Mercedes AMG cars - opens in new window or tab., Black Series editions are quite rare. For example, in 2009, AMG built a scant 350 units of the SL 65 Black Series cars—and only about 175 of these made it to America. To date, only five Mercedes models have been given the Black-Series treatment—the SLK 55, SLS 63, SL 65, CLK 63, and the most recent C63.

While the CLK 63 Black Series is bona fide, AMG produced them in a relatively higher quantity—outputting 500 of them with 349 units delivered to the United States. Among CLK 63 Black Series cars on the secondary market today, the car available on eBay Motors sits atop the totem pole. Most CLK 63s that come up for sale are used cars with well over 15,000 miles. That puts this vehicle in the investment-grade category, even if doesn’t reach the heights of other Black Series models—such as this 2014 matte-black SLS Black Series with just 3,000 miles of use and a Buy-It-Now price of, ahem, $468,500.

Despite its slightly more manageable economics, this CLK 63 Black Series is exceptional in every sense. The privileges of owning this CLK 63 AMG include tossing the small, powerful, and nimble machine around the track—and never seeing another Black Series car on the drive home.
