A Successful Marriage
The seller, based in Eustis, Fla., provided an extensive listing that details the build. They wanted the look of a classic British racer but a bike they could ride whenever and however they wanted. Using Kawasaki components means reliable electrics and power, plus modern-era forks with a disc brake. That deviates from the bike’s purity, but dependability and an un-stained garage floor are more likely.
The original Norton Manx racer was one of the cornerstones of the Cafe Racer look. That look gained fame from tremendous success at the famous Isle of Man TT - opens in new window or tab. races in the ’50s and ’60s. Riders want to emulate that style on the street, and this is a fine-looking effort.
The frame comes from Andover Norton in the south of England. It’s based on the type built in 1954, although it had a clean 2023 Florida title. The frame looks superb, as do the handmade aluminum tank and Norton logo. This is nice attention to detail.
The Power
Purists will notice immediately that the Kawasaki engine cants slightly forward compared to the original 500-cc item. It also lacks some of the fancier visual touches associated with classic British bikes. That’s fair. But the KLR is a great choice as a modern-era alternative.
Peak power, at about 50 horsepower, almost matches the original. And there’s more torque on tap. Listen to the video linked in the listing to hear how the exhaust makes the 650 sound the part.

Imagery
This 2023 bike is, of course, an evocation of a 1954 British classic. Norton used the term “Manx” on racing versions of its road machines. By 1954, it was synonymous with great success on road courses. This was a high point for the firm.
