By the early 1970s, the muscle car era was drawing to a close. But some surviving nameplates were still in their full glory. The 1972 Oldsmobile 442 example recently offered on eBay represents the pinnacle of the model’s evolution.
The Power of 442 Plus W-30
The first examples of the Oldsmobile 442 rolled into dealerships for the 1964 model year, just as the muscle car wars were kicking into gear.
The 442 was inspired by the Pontiac GTO and other high-performance models of the era. The first examples came with an upgraded version of the Oldsmobile 330-cubic inch V-8, producing 310 horsepower.
As the story goes, the 442 name came from the combination of goodies included with the $285 package. It brought a four-barrel carburetor, four-speed transmission, and dual exhaust. Get it: four, four, two—and that’s how it should be pronounced.
The 442 eventually became a standalone model, but it didn't start out that way. It was an appearance and handling option for the Oldsmobile F-85 and Cutlass. By checking the box, your car got an enhanced suspension and a special hood. To make sure the world knew what you were piloting, it also came with side stripes and 442 badging.
By 1972, the 442 reverted to being a Cutlass option. The example for sale on eBay from that year is one of just 659 coupes produced with the updated, rare and potent W-30 option package. Making it rarer still, this is one of only 289 W-30 1972 hardtops that left the factory with a four-speed manual transmission. How do we know? The specs were certified by noted Oldsmobile W-30 expert Stephen J. Minore.
455 cubic-inch V-8, Good for 300 Horsepower

What makes 442 W-30 cars is its mighty 455 cubic-inch Oldsmobile V-8. Moreover, the list of high-performance modifications included a heavy-duty radiator and an aluminum intake manifold. There were also a unique camshaft, heads, valves, and other bits making the 455 good for 300 horsepower (in the then-new stricter SAE net horsepower classification).
Other unique W-30 features included functional twin fiberglass hood scoops, W-30 stripes and badging, a limited-slip differential, and low-restriction exhausts.
