Honda wanted a recreational trail bike - opens in new window or tab. with oversized front and rear racks to carry the stuff needed for an off-road adventure. It’s a good-looking machine that would likely succeed in today’s US market. Until then, you can buy this one, recently for sale on eBay.
Part Motorcycle, Part Truck
The name Motra combines the Japanese words for “motorcycle” and “torakku,” which means truck.
The JDM CT50 Motra uses a single-cylinder air-cooled 49-cc four-stroke motor to produce a mellow 4.5 horsepower. A handy two-stage, three-speed gearbox—with separate high and low ratio settings—allows riders to move at higher speeds or switch to a low-speed ratio for climbing. It’s a one-bike-does-all motorcycle.
Other unique features include a heel-toe shift lever - opens in new window or tab. for easy gear changes with the automatic clutch three-speed transmission. That’s unusual for an off-road bike.
The center stand doubles as an engine guard - opens in new window or tab. to help protect the underside of the motor from damage when in use. Honda thoughtfully mounted the headlight and taillight on the Motra directly below the racks for an unobstructed view when riding the bike at night, loaded with cargo.
Low and Comfortable
Honda uses 10-inch diameter, 5.4-inch wide balloon tires - opens in new window or tab. mounted on painted mag wheels to help absorb impacts in rough terrain. The wheel-and-tire combo, along with the telescopic non-inverted front forks and dual rear shocks, provides a plush ride.
A wide, ultra-cushioned solo seat pairs with upright, tall handlebars and simple controls for a comfortable setup during extended periods in the saddle. The seat height is relatively low—28 inches—allowing shorter riders to touch the ground easily.
During its two-year production run, CT50 Motra was offered in two eye-catching colorways: dark green or bright yellow—like the one for sale on eBay. Weighing only 190 pounds, the bike is relatively small, which makes it easily transportable in a truck or trailer hitch receiver rack - opens in new window or tab..
We don’t know precisely how many JDM Motras were produced by Honda. Regardless, it’s hard to find one in the US. With 7,022 miles on the odometer and engine and gear oils recently changed, the 1982 Honda CT50 Motra is ready for a new home—and many more miles on the trail.
