General Tire Company History

General Tire traces its origins to Akron, Ohio - opens in new window or tab.. In 1915, General joined more than 300 other rubber companies making tires in the US. Most competitors focused on bicycle and carriage tires. However, business partners William F. O’Neill and Winfred E. Fouse carved out a niche focusing on the truck tire market.

By the 1930s, General Tire was one of the largest tire manufacturers in the US and became the general equipment tire for International Harvester. By the 1950s, they became the original equipment tire supplier for General Motors, and opened more manufacturing plants across the US. Through the 1960s and ’70s, General Tire continued to grow. In 1987, the company was acquired by the German tire manufacturer Continental.

While the corporate name became Continental Tire North America in 2000, the company continues to operate under the brand name General Tire. The company manufactures a wide range of summer, winter, all-season, all-weather and all-terrain tires for passenger cars and trucks and commercial trucks for on- and off-road use.
