The ultimate version of the Ferrari 488 supercar is the Pista, which translates to “track.” It gets oomph from the most powerful V-8 engine in the Ferrari history. A new Spider (convertible) example of the 488 Pista sold on eBay last week for $649,880.
The 2020 car with a Triple Pearl Bianco exterior and Charcoal Alcantara interior had only 285 miles on the odometer.

eBay Brings Upscale Online

The conventional wisdom used to be that high-end consumers would only buy expensive cars like Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and Bentleys in person. For that matter, the auto industry until recently assumed all vehicles must be purchased face to face.
Those ideas are long gone. eBay has seven pages of Lamborghinis - opens in new window or tab. and six pages of Rolls-Royces - opens in new window or tab.. Do you fancy a meticulously restored $4.4 million 1960 Aston Martin DB4 Zagato? That’s ready for bidding on eBay.

Rare classics and practically undriven supercars command a particular premium. They are increasingly sold online, via great photography and vivid descriptions.
When you can go online and browse dealer offerings in Dubai, Geneva, London, Monaco, Tokyo, LA, Greenwich, and Marbella, it makes tracking down your ideal supercar a lot less labor-intensive. We don’t just mean some low-$100,000s Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, or Maserati either. We mean the kind of cars that occasionally make their way out to Pebble Beach before being flat bedded back home and returned to their climate-controlled home via their garage’s elevator.

Power Play

The 488 Pista was introduced in 2018 at the Geneva Motor Show. The parentage was a pair of track cars, the 488 GTE and 488 Challenge. A 3.9-liter, twin-turbocharged V-8producing 710 horsepower and 568 pound-feet of torqueis under the hood.
The original 488, introduced in 2015, made do with just 661 horsepower.

Redesigned camshafts and a bigger intercooler provide the extra power. Essentially, it’s the Challenge engine in a streetcar. The 2020 Pista Spider started at just $350,000. Clearly, the car that sold on eBay was exceptional. And values are going up.

The McLaren Senna used a similar formula. eBay offered one of those for $1.15 million late last year. The Senna was “designed, engineered and developed with a single-minded purpose: to be the ultimate McLaren track-focused car for the road.”
The current trend in supercars is toward models that plug in. Tesla’s eBay page - opens in new window or tab. has extensive listings for every model, most of which are capable of blistering performance.
The most super of the super EVs is a particular 2020 Tesla Model X Performance model. It has Ludicrous mode, robust self-driving features, and $70,000 of T Sportline customized features. Total Buy-It-Now price? A neat $188,000.

The point is that you don’t have to go to a fancy in-person auction to buy a supercar. You probably can’t do that anyway because of COVID-19.
The world has changed. You can now find the rarest, most exotic, track-bred hypercars, as well as parts for them, on eBay.
