The 2021 BMW M 1000 RR recently sold on eBay - opens in new window or tab. is one of only 500 examples built for FIM World Superbike homologation purposes. And it’s road-legal.

The M Badge

The BMW M 1000 RR is the race-ready big brother of the already-legendary S 1000 RR, created to homologate parts for racing in the FIM World Superbike Championship - opens in new window or tab.. This was the first bike that BMW deemed worthy of its famous M badge. Its list price in 2021 was almost double that of the S 1000 RR.

Showing just 1,300 miles from new, this machine has clearly been given as much love and care as possible. Servicing is up to snuff, and having been kept in a climate-controlled garage, it appears to be completely without cosmetic flaws. The swaths of carbon fiber wouldn’t have been available on the stock bike. That suggests that perhaps this one was ordered with the M Competition package.

Game-Changing S 1000 RR

Before the S 1000 RR’s seismic impact in 2010, BMW had spent almost a century building fine adventure and touring machines. The engineering, fit, finish, and strength of these bikes were top-tier, but for ultimate speed and handling you’d look elsewhere.

The S 1000 RR not only emerged as a rival for Italian and Japanese superbikes, but it was also broadly proclaimed by reviewers to be superior. It was so good that for around a decade, all that was necessary to keep it at the head of the superbike table was the occasional cosmetic or mechanical enhancement. Then, in 2019, it was heavily revised to have more power, less weight, and a suite of electronics. From this came the M 1000 RR.

Race-Ready M 1000 RR

Four-wheel fans have enjoyed M-badged cars for many years, but the M 1000 RR was BMW’s first-ever motorcycle to earn the storied moniker. It was the answer to Ducati’s Panigale V4R - opens in new window or tab., and FIM rules stated that 500 road-going examples had to be built before it could race.

BMW engineers fitted the M 100o RR with launch control, a quick shifter, and a 45-tooth rear sprocket to [DO SOMETHING]. The engine was purpose-built with revised intake port geometry, a 13.5:1 compression ratio, and lighter rocker arms - opens in new window or tab..
Additional M 1000 RR engine upgrades include:
The performance enhancements mean a few more horsepower and quicker acceleration (hitting 125 mph from rest a full 0.5-second sooner than the S), while the weight savings result in a mass of just 420 pounds. The main advantage of the mechanical enhancements is that the M spins up to a racy 15,000 rpm, while the S version is all out of ideas at 13,500 rpm.

Do You Need One?

Menacing
That depends. If you just want a very good 1,000-cc superbike for the street, possibly not. But as the cornerstone of a collection that can also be enjoyed and would leave observers jaw-agape at a bike meet, it’s hard to beat. With just 188 examples designated for the US, when might another be available?
