For decades, the idea of a high performance pickup truck was a novelty. Manufacturers occasionally tried out the idea—in effort to spice up their showrooms and soak up a little extra ink in the buff books. For every worthwhile effort—like the Dodge Lil' Red Express or GMC Syclone—there were five sticker packages or body kits forced onto largely ordinary trucks, such as the the Chevrolet 454 SS. These failed attempts were spec'd with impressively-sized but largely anemic parts bin engines that did little to back up their aggressive attitudes. That all changed in 1999 when Ford debuted the SVT Lightning - opens in new window or tab..
The Lightning took a shortbox, step-side F-150 and dropped a 5.4-liter supercharged V8 engine under the hood—backed by a four-speed automatic transmission and a limited-slip rear differential. A stiff suspension system dropped the truck down to the ground, and an aero-friendly body kit quickly identified it as being unlike any other F-150 in the Blue Oval's product mix.

It's hard to stress just how “out there” the Ford F-150 SVT Lightning was when it first hit the streets. Here was a truck that didn't just pay lip service to the idea of performance, but actually snuck up behind it and hit it on the head with a 360-horsepower bat. Power would grow to 380 horses and 450 pound-feet of torque for the 2000 model year, and Ford worked hard to continually improve the impressive 5.4-liter powertrain throughout the truck's entire five-year lifespan.
At the track—well, the drag strip, at least—the SVT Lightning acquitted itself well, posting a quarter mile time of 13.8 seconds along with the ability to leap to 60-mph in just a tick over five seconds. These numbers were excellent for sports cars of the day, let alone a pickup truck weighing nearly 5,000 pounds. The best part was you didn't have to sacrifice practicality in the process, as the Ford maintained respectable hauling and towing capacity to go with its performance chops.

The modular 5.4-liter supercharged V8 is stuffed way under the SVT Lightning's firewall, where it produces up to 380 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque.
Without the Lightning, there would be no Viper-powered Ram SRT, or
modern SVT Raptor.
The SVT effort set the template for future performance pickups and banished stickered-up pretenders to the dust heap. There's no question in my mind that the SVT Lightning will one day be a sought-after collectible. Fewer than 30,000 of these vehicles were built, and given how hard some of them were driven, and how friendly the supercharged platform was to modifications, it's not going to be easy to find clean examples in 10 years time. If you do see one, snag it and sit on it –or drive it and enjoy one of the purest expressions of American muscle from the turn of the millennium.
