Off-roading is more popular than ever, as witnessed by the explosion of new overland-inspired vehicles on the market. Most of them are new, high-tech four-wheelers aimed at luxury buyers—the glamping and #VanLife crowd.
Meanwhile, classic car aficionados wanting to venture into the wild can look back at vintage off-road platforms—such as this classic 1995 Land Rover Defender 90 recently offered for sale on eBay.

This ’95 Defender was restored to better-than-new condition. It’s a foreign-market model, likely sold initially in mainland Europe. The left-hand drive vehicle was fitted with the 2.5-liter turbodiesel engine that Land Rover didn’t offer in the US at the time.
The 111 horsepower doesn’t sound like much, but with plenty of torque from the turbodiesel and with practiced use of the five-speed manual, this Defender can traverse tricky terrain.
Fitted for Family Outings

The seller, Kent Classic Defenders - opens in new window or tab., specializes in importing Land Rovers from the UK—and restoring them for use in the US.

For example, the outfit fully sorted the Defender 90’s interior with new seats covered in weather-resistant vinyl. In addition, the seller notes that the front seats are heated, significantly improving the original. A toasty seat is a treat on an early-morning off-road adventure.
The soft top is similarly new, and the aluminum bodywork is finished in a handsome shade of blue. The classically British Rostyle wheels—with the characteristic pressed steel and raised spokes—are painted body color.
We love the fitment of four rear seats, as it allows for a bigger family to go on a camping trip—or just down the street for ice cream. The teak flooring is an excellent touch here. It’s a naturally weather-resistant wood that should hold up well if you get caught in a storm. And, let’s be honest, old Land Rovers never had great weather-sealing.

Another vintage British car trait is electrical gremlins. Pick up a digital multimeter - opens in new window or tab. from eBay so you can trace and chase typically dodgy British wiring.
Beach Bumming in Comfort and Style

The seller, based in Florida, gave a name to this Land Rover: “The Beach Runner.” The listing photos are staged on white sand by the water. We love this idea.
The Land Rover has room for everything you need for a long day at the beach. The all-road capability will bring you right to the water’s edge and get you safely off the beach before the tide rolls in.
The Defender is perfect for beach cruising since the aluminum body can't rust from salt water. A winch on the front bumper is extra insurance, in case you get stuck.

Land Rover might have created this iconic Defender 90 for dreary British climates. But the seller artfully remade this one for delightful outings in the Florida sun.
