In 1970, the newly introduced Ford Maverick targeted buyers of import economy cars. Ford famously priced the no-frills Maverick at $1,995.
But the Maverick Stallion Edition, like the one recently offered on eBay, is a performance car far removed from those humble roots. While this one retains its original appearance, the owner introduced contemporary upgrades to add power and more aggressive looks.

Meaner Looks (and LED Lights) for This Stallion
The ’76 Stallion was a one-year-only offering. The limited-production model came with a 302 cubic inch V-8, four-speed manual transmission, and upgraded suspension and brakes to handle the additional performance.
Distinctive graphics, a blacked-out grille and trim, and a choice of just five custom color combinations completed the package. Ford built fewer than about 5,500 Maverick Stallions.
The Stallion’s owner brought the car’s look and performance to a new level. The distinctive red and black paint scheme remains, along with the original Stallion front fender graphics. However, the clunky oversized original bumpers meant to provide low-speed crash protection are gone. Those were replaced by smaller units from a pre-1974 Maverick that are better proportioned to the car’s lines.
Other exterior enhancements include:

Oversize black spoked wheels and tires complete the aggressive look.
An Engine Swap and Upgraded Audio
The seller swapped out the original V-8 for a newer 302 for increased performance. Enhanced cosmetic details include Ford Racing valve covers secured by chrome wing bolts. In addition, a 373 limited-slip differential from a Ford Explorer helps handle the increased power.
The transmission is a Tremec T5 manual - opens in new window or tab., with a short-throw floor shifter - opens in new window or tab. mounted in a custom fabricated console with carbon-fiber inserts. The console also houses these items:
- Ancillary instruments for oil pressure, engine temperature, and voltage
- A relocated fuel gauge
- An upgraded audio system head unit - opens in new window or tab. with aftermarket speakers on either side
Additional speakers were mounted on the rear package shelf, while the carpeted trunk houses dual subwoofers and a Rockville amplifier - opens in new window or tab..
Sharp Interior Styling
Custom high-back black cloth bucket seats with aggressive bolsters help keep the driver and passenger in place during aggressive driving. They feature contrasting red piping to match the exterior color scheme. The padded dash top appears free of cracks, tears, or other damage, as does the matching black headliner.
The original circular factory gauge housings in front of the driver are now home to a tachometer and Eling digital GPS speedometer with a trip odometer.
A thick-rimmed spoked steering wheel completes the business-like look. The carpets, protected by floor mats - opens in new window or tab., are in good condition.
This 1976 Stallion is no longer an economy model. Instead, it’s a rare and stylish classic performance car with appealing upgrades to make it a civilized and enjoyable daily driver. Priced at $22,000, the Stallion that was listed on eBay offered a lot of bang for the buck.
