By 1971, the muscle car wars of the previous decade were coming to a close. They were falling victim to factors like skyrocketing insurance rates, stricter vehicle emissions standards, and changing tastes.
Chrysler Corporation’s Dodge division was among the holdouts. They continued to produce no-holds-barred performance models like the limited-production Dodge Super Bee recently offered on eBay.
Most competing models from Chrysler’s domestic rivals quickly became shadows of their former selves. Only decal packages - opens in new window or tab. and racing stripes - opens in new window or tab. distinguished them from mainstream family haulers. However, Chrysler and its subsidiaries took a different approach.

End of the Line

Dodge continued to deliver the goods, with models like the Super Bee offering real muscle under the hood. Engine choices included the mighty 383 Magnum V-8, good for 300 horsepower when ordered with a four-barrel carburetor - opens in new window or tab..
That’s the original and matching-numbers powertrain under the hood of this rare Dodge Super Bee, made all the more desirable because 1971 marked the last year of production for both the 383 and the Super Bee.

Based on the redesigned 1971 Dodge Charger - opens in new window or tab., the Super Bee was marketed strictly as a performance car. Extras were largely limited to powertrain and suspension enhancements. Instead of bucket seats and a console, for example, the Super Bee got a front bench seat and column shifter.

That’s not to say this Dodge Super Bee is a basic model devoid of features. Extras include full factory carpeting, a padded sport steering wheel, the obligatory woodgrain trim on the dash and doors, and a four-speed manual transmission with the iconic pistol-grip shifter - opens in new window or tab.. Designed to be more ergonomically friendly than a ball or T grip, the pistol grip looks the business and is original to the car.

Untouched

Arguably the coolest thing about this Super Bee is its unrestored, original condition. Wearing its original gold paint and factory Super Bee graphics modified only by 50 years of patina, this Dodge Super Bee is as honest an example as you’ll find.
With just 80,000 miles showing on the odometer, it’s entirely believable that the mileage is original. Said to be just 1 of 766 produced for 1971 with the 383 Magnum and a four-speed, it is doubtful many remain and even more unlikely that another as original will pop up anytime soon.

Recent work includes a new fuel tank - opens in new window or tab., rebuilt Holley carburetor - opens in new window or tab., and new seat covers - opens in new window or tab.. All that’s needed is a new owner to step in with their vision. The original look is cool, but minimal rust and low mileage also make this Dodge Super Bee an excellent candidate for restoration.

The 383 Magnum is not only known as a robust engine but has also long been a favorite of racers and enthusiasts. It is easy to modify for even more power, with performance parts readily available on eBay. What would you do with this blank canvas?
