Mercedes 280E AMG Limited Edition: A Bargain Price for a Hot-Rod Benz

Before AMG became Mercedes-Benz’s in-house performance division, it had built a global fanbase with its unique blend of performance, cosmetic trim, and regional differences for each model. One example that most US buyers have likely never heard of is the Mercedes-Benz 280E AMG Limited Edition, like the one in San Carlos, Calif. that was recently listed on eBay.
280E Underpinnings
The 280E AMG is based on the Mercedes-Benz W124 E-Class, which enthusiasts often consider one of the company’s finest chassis. Built from 1984 to 1997, it hailed from when Mercedes vehicles were sturdy and staid—before the company started chasing BMW’s sportiness.
The most exotic W124, the 500E, was contracted out to Porsche for construction and adhered to Mercedes’s standards of comfort. This compromised its ability to be an all-out BMW killer.

Rebranding as a performance-luxury marque led Mercedes to purchase a controlling stake in AMG in 1999. This shift highlights the demand for performance-modified Mercedes cars. The Legend of AMG
By the time Mercedes set its designs on acquiring AMG outright, there were already importers of its parts in the UK, Japan, Canada, and the US. Finished AMG cars were not authorized for sale via US Mercedes-Benz dealers, but parts and accessories were.
Customers could buy a Mercedes and then hand it over to technicians for all the AMG goodies their wallets could sustain. Or they could buy a few parts and install them on their own. In Japan, things operated differently. The distributor AMG Ltd. was able to import a small run of W124-based cars. Most enthusiasts are probably familiar with the 500E V-8-based AMG cars, but the 280E AMG Limited Edition came with a Mercedes M104 2.8-liter inline-6 - opens in new window or tab. producing 197 horsepower and 199 pound-feet of torque. This was due to strict engine displacement classes in Japan’s road tax system.

While the drivetrain did not include the significant horsepower modifications that AMG was known for, performance was enhanced with an AMG suspension - opens in new window or tab., beautiful 17-inch two-piece BBS RT 046 wheels - opens in new window or tab., and an AMG exhaust system - opens in new window or tab.. That was enough to warrant the 280E AMG's 260-kph speedometer.
Other AMG cosmetic bits include:

- Rubber fender arches
- Leather sport seats
- Ashtray wood panel Limited Edition logo
- Limited Edition scuff plate
Only 50 Mercedes-Benz 280E AMG Limited Editions were built, and they were initially sold only in Japan. Since then, only a few have made their way to the US. Sales of true AMG W124s are few and far between in the States, so it’s hard to find comparables. One with 52,000 miles on the clock sold in December 2022 for just under $40,000. Earlier this year, a 6.0-liter AMG Hammer sold for $775,000.
The 280E AMG for sale on eBay has 92,500 miles, but the seller is asking only $26,000. That makes for a bargain deal on a more drivable AMG Benz. And it’s arguably more authentically AMG than the ones originally sold in the US.
