The term “hot hatch” has been around for decades, typically used with varying degrees of accuracy to describe a small car offering both lively performance and some degree of practicality. Some hatches are hotter than others, and there’s plenty of debate around what was the first hot hatch. We’ll stay out of that argument, and just say that the Volkswagen GTI is one of the first and arguably the best known.

First introduced for the 1983 model year, the GTI was an immediate hit with reviewers and the buying public. Now in its eighth generation, the GTI remains every bit as popular. An excellent example of a classic 1990 GTI was recently listed on eBay.
A 1990 GTI from the second generation—an MK2 in GTI-speak—this one maintains a clean and unmodified look, unlike so many of its contemporaries that fell victim to hard use. Having spent most of its days in the dry climates of Arizona and Southern California, it has been spared from the ravages of rust.
A Secret Beneath the Hood
Better still, this MK2 GTI has had a number of tasteful and sensible upgrades for increased performance and drivability. The biggest of these is a swap of the original, 105-horsepower, 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine for a 172-horsepower, 2.8-liter six-cylinder engine from a newer, third generation MK3 GTI. In addition to a big bump in horsepower, the VR6 engine - opens in new window or tab. offers a lot more low-end torque for easy drivability. The transmission is a five-speed manual.
Other upgrades include lowered coilover suspension - opens in new window or tab. for enhanced handling, refinished 16-inch BBS wheels - opens in new window or tab. with new tires, a rear spoiler, and an aftermarket Pioneer audio system - opens in new window or tab.. The 1990 GTI has had one repaint in its original red, and still shines nicely with only a few minor flaws.
The 1990 GTI's upholstery appears to be intact, but time has taken its toll on the Recaro bolsters.
The interior is in good condition, with no rips or tears in the aggressively bolstered Recaro sports seats - opens in new window or tab. or the carpet. The headliner and dash top appear to be in good condition, despite many years in a sunny climate. The exception is a missing piece of trim on the factory sunroof.
This 1990 GTI Doesn’t Need Much to Be Spectacular
A clean and appealing 1990 GTI with the bonus of engine and suspension upgrades, this car is also appealingly affordable. A Buy-it-Now price of just $9,995 reflects a need for some minor repairs. Some instruments are not functional. But the heavy lifting is done, and the seller says the car runs and drives well as is. That means the next owner can enjoy this hottest of hatches just as it sits, and tinker with its needs as time permits. VW fanatics tend not to leave well enough alone anyway, and getting a wrench on your ride is all part of the fun. Just try not to get into arguments about what was the original hot hatch.
